These were a must for Christmas every year when I was growing up. By the time I got to be 10 I was making them myself.

Time 30m

Number Of Ingredients 10

1/2 c shortening
1/2 c creamy peanut butter
1 c sugar
1 egg
2 Tbsp milk
1 tsp vanilla
1 1/4 c flour
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 c semisweet chocolate chips

Steps:

  • 1. In a mixing bowl, cream shortening, peanut butter and sugar. Add egg, milk and vanilla. Combine the flour, baking soda and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour or more, until easy to handle. Turn onto a lightly floured surface; roll into a 16 by 12 inch rectangle.
  • 2. Melt chocolate chips; cool slightly. Spread over dough to within 1/2 inch of edges. Tightly roll up jelly-roll style, starting with a long side. Wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. Unwrap and cut into 1/4 inch thick slices. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheets. Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool. Do NOT over-bake. These should not be hard cookies.
  • 3. Refrigerating dough well is the key to making these cookies. If they are too soft (because it is warm) the dough will not hold up. Work quickly once dough is removed from the refrigerator.

Time 1h5m

Yield 16

Number Of Ingredients 11

6 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened baking chocolate, coarsely chopped
½ cup unsalted butter
2 (1 ounce) squares semisweet baking chocolate, coarsely chopped
1 ¾ cups white sugar
3 large eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup all-purpose flour
3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup dark chocolate chips
1 cup peanut butter chips
4 tablespoons peanut butter

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line an 8-inch square baking pan with parchment paper.
  • Place unsweetened chocolate, butter, and semisweet chocolate in the top of a double boiler over simmering water. Stir frequently, scraping down the sides with a rubber spatula to avoid scorching, until chocolate is melted, about 5 minutes. Remove from the heat and cool to room temperature, about 10 minutes.
  • Whisk sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract together in a large bowl. Whisk in cooled chocolate mixture. Stir in flour with a spoon until incorporated. Stir in dark chocolate chips and peanut butter chips.
  • Spread 1/2 of the batter in the prepared baking pan. Take 1/2 of the peanut butter and put it in small dots over top of the batter, then use a knife to spread it into a marble-like pattern. Top with remaining batter, dot with remaining peanut butter, and swirl again.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 25 to 35 minutes. Let cool completely before slicing.

Tips:

  • Mise en Place: Before you start baking, make sure you have all the ingredients and equipment you need. This will help you stay organized and avoid any scrambling later on.
  • Use Quality Ingredients: The quality of your ingredients will impact the final flavor of your peanut chocolate whirls. Use high-quality chocolate and peanut butter for the best results.
  • Chill the Dough: Chilling the dough before baking will help it hold its shape better in the oven. This will prevent the cookies from spreading too much and becoming misshapen.
  • Don't Overmix the Dough: Overmixing the dough will make the cookies tough. Mix the dough just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Bake the Cookies Until They Are Just Set: The cookies should be slightly soft in the center when you take them out of the oven. They will continue to firm up as they cool.

Conclusion:

Peanut chocolate whirls are a delicious and easy-to-make treat that is perfect for any occasion. With their combination of peanut butter and chocolate, these cookies are sure to be a hit. Follow the tips above to make sure your peanut chocolate whirls turn out perfectly every time.
