THE BEST SLOPPY JOES

The Best Sloppy Joes image

This is weeknight comfort food at its finest. We created a homemade sauce that is tangy and flavorful but also quick and easy. We used both ketchup and canned tomato sauce for lots of tomato-y zip and just a touch of brown sugar for a bit of sweetness and slight caramel finish. Green bell pepper is a key addition; it really enhances the other ingredients, elevating the flavor profile into the realm of a true sloppy joe.

Time 30m

Yield 4 to 6 sandwiches

Number Of Ingredients 15

2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 medium onion, diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 pound lean ground beef
12 ounces (1 1/3 cup) tomato sauce
3/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
1 teaspoon paprika
Pinch of cayenne pepper
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
6 hamburger buns, toasted

Steps:

  • Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and starting to caramelize in some spots, 6 to 7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the beef and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon or spatula, until it is browned, no longer pink in the middle and cooked through, 7 to 8 minutes.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, red wine vinegar, paprika, cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon salt and a generous amount of black pepper and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened and heated through, 5 to 6 minutes. Spoon the meat onto the toasted buns.

This recipe comes from Paula Deen's Magazine. I added green pepper to her recipe and I also put these meatballs in my crockpot after baking them instead of back in the oven.

Time 30m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 lb lean ground beef
2 -3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1/2 cup prepared French onion soup (mix with the water)
yellow mustard
4 slices white bread
1 medium onion, cut into rings

Steps:

  • In a medium skillet over medium-high heat, brown ground beef and drain.
  • Return ground beef to skillet and sprinkle in 2 to 3 tablespoons flour.
  • Add onion soup, stir, and cook until meat mixture is thickened and most of the liquid is absorbed.
  • Spread mustard on white bread, spoon ground beef mixture onto bread and top with onion.

Tips:

  • Use a variety of ground meats to add flavor and texture to your sloppy joes. Ground beef, pork, and turkey are all good options.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment with different seasonings. Paula Deen's recipe calls for a simple combination of salt, pepper, and onion powder, but you can add other spices like garlic powder, chili powder, or cumin to taste.
  • Cook the meat over medium heat until it is browned all the way through. This will help to develop the flavor and prevent the meat from becoming dry.
  • Drain the excess grease from the meat before adding the sauce. This will help to keep the sloppy joes from being too greasy.
  • Use a good quality barbecue sauce. The sauce is the star of the show in sloppy joes, so make sure to choose one that you like.
  • Let the sloppy joes simmer for at least 30 minutes before serving. This will allow the flavors to meld together and develop.
  • Serve the sloppy joes on toasted buns with your favorite toppings. Some popular options include cheese, lettuce, tomato, and onion.

Conclusion:

Paula Deen's sloppy joes are a classic comfort food that is easy to make and loved by people of all ages. With a few simple tips, you can make sure that your sloppy joes are always delicious. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal, give this recipe a try.
