These are perfect for breakfast! I modified the recipe a little bit and I half the recipe. I use less fat sausage and crescent dough. I think they would be excellent as an appetizer with hot sausage. Chilling time is not included in the prep or cook time.

Provided by Little Bee

Categories     Breakfast

Time 45m

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 lb ground sausage
1/3 cup chopped onion
1 tablespoon butter
3/4 cup milk
1 (3 ounce) package cream cheese
3 eggs
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon salt (use less if the sausage is salty)
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 (9 inch) deep dish pie shells, partially baked and cooled

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375°.
  • In a heavy skillet over medium heat, crumble the sausage with a fork.
  • Sauté the sausage until completely cooked.
  • Drain off the fat, remove the sausage, and set aside.
  • Melt the butter in another skillet over medium heat.
  • Sauté the onions in the butter until tender.
  • Add the milk and heat until steam rises, but do not boil the milk.
  • Cut the cream cheese into small pieces, add it to the onion mixture, and remove the pan from the heat.
  • In a large bowl, beat the eggs, then add the cheddar, the onion mixture, the Worcestershire, salt, and pepper.
  • Mix thoroughly and pour this into the pie crust.
  • Top with cooked sausage, and bake for 30 minutes, or until set.

Tips:

  • Use a sharp knife to cut the crescent roll dough into strips. This will help prevent the dough from tearing.
  • If you don't have a baking sheet that's large enough to fit all of the sausage swirls, you can bake them in batches.
  • If you're using a nonstick baking sheet, you may not need to grease it. However, if you're using a regular baking sheet, you should grease it to prevent the sausage swirls from sticking.
  • Bake the sausage swirls until they're golden brown, about 15-20 minutes. If you're not sure if they're done cooking, insert a toothpick into the center of a sausage swirl. If the toothpick comes out clean, the sausage swirls are done.
  • Let the sausage swirls cool slightly before serving. This will help prevent them from falling apart.

Paula Deen's Sausage Swirls are a quick and easy breakfast or brunch recipe that's perfect for busy mornings. They're also a great way to use up leftover sausage.
