1 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt

I doctored this up a bit--used the whole piece of bread and didn't remove the crusts, added fresh basil, fresh tomatoes, and spinach. Recipe posted as written.

Time 1h

Yield 8-10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

nonstick cooking spray
1 lb ground maple pork sausage
6 slices soft hearty white bread
8 ounces cheddar cheese, shredded
8 large eggs
2 cups whole milk
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon seasoned pepper

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350. Spray a 13x9 inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray.
  • In a large skillet, cook the sausage over medium heat, stirring frequently, until browned and crumbly, about 10 minutes, drain well on paper towels.
  • Cut and discard the crusts from the bread. Cut the slices in half and arrange in a single layer in a prepared baking dish, cutting pieces to fit as necessary to cover the bottom of the dish. Sprinkle with the sausage and cheese.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, mustard, seasoned salt, and pepper. Carefully pour the mixture over the cheese.
  • Bake casserole until set and golden, about 40 minutes. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Tips:

  • Prep Ahead: Paula Deen's Breakfast Casserole is perfect for meal prep. Assemble the casserole the night before and refrigerate overnight. In the morning, simply pop it in the oven and bake.
  • Use Fresh Ingredients: Fresh ingredients will give your casserole the best flavor. Use fresh vegetables, eggs, and cheese. If you can, use homemade bread cubes instead of store-bought.
  • Don't Overcook: The casserole is done when the eggs are set and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Overcooking will make the casserole dry and tough.
  • Serve with Your Favorite Toppings: Paula Deen's Breakfast Casserole is delicious on its own, but you can also serve it with your favorite toppings. Some popular choices include salsa, sour cream, avocado, and hot sauce.

Conclusion:

Paula Deen's Breakfast Casserole is a delicious, easy-to-make dish that is perfect for any occasion. It's a great way to use up leftover bread and vegetables, and it's also a crowd-pleaser. Whether you're serving it for breakfast, brunch, or dinner, this casserole is sure to be a hit.
