PAINTED EGG COOKIES

Time 2h30m

Yield Makes 33 three-inch cookies

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon coarse salt
1 stick unsalted butter, room temperature
1 cup sugar
1/2 vanilla bean, seeds scraped (optional)
1 large egg, plus 1 or more large egg yolks
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Food coloring

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. In another bowl, beat butter, sugar, and vanilla-bean seeds on medium until pale and fluffy, 4 minutes. Mix in egg and vanilla extract. With mixer on low, gradually beat in flour mixture. Bring dough together with hands. Flatten into a disk and wrap in plastic. Chill 30 minutes.
  • Roll out dough 1/4 inch thick on a lightly floured surface. Cut out shapes with egg-shaped cutters (we used 1- to 3-inch-long ones); reroll and cut scraps. Arrange on parchment-lined baking sheets. Chill 15 minutes.
  • For each color, place an egg yolk in a bowl. Add 1 drop food coloring; stir to combine. Add water a little at a time to achieve a paler shade, if desired. Brush over tops of egg shapes. Bake until edges turn golden, about 13 minutes for 1-inch shapes; up to 17 minutes for 3-inch shapes. Let cool on sheets on wire racks.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality ingredients. This will make a big difference in the taste of your cookies. Use real butter, pure vanilla extract, and high-quality cocoa powder.
  • Don't overmix the dough. Overmixing will make the cookies tough. Mix the dough just until the ingredients are combined.
  • Chill the dough before baking. This will help the cookies hold their shape and prevent them from spreading too much.
  • Bake the cookies at the right temperature. The cookies should be baked at a temperature of 350 degrees Fahrenheit (175 degrees Celsius). If the oven is too hot, the cookies will brown too quickly and the centers will be undercooked.
  • Let the cookies cool completely before decorating them. This will help the frosting set properly.

Conclusion:

Painted egg cookies are a delicious and festive treat that are perfect for Easter or any other spring celebration. They are easy to make and can be decorated in a variety of ways. With a little creativity, you can create beautiful and unique cookies that will be sure to impress your friends and family.
