ORIENTAL RICE PILAF

This is not fried rice, but rather a spin on it. Goes well as a side with many dishes. Don't skip toasting the sesame seeds. It's fun to watch them pop, too.

Time 25m

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 11

1/2 cup chopped onion
1 garlic clove, minced
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1 3/4 cups beef broth
1 cup uncooked jasmine rice
1 tablespoon reduced sodium soy sauce
1 pinch salt
1 pinch red pepper flakes
1/3 cup thinly sliced green onion
1/3 cup diced red pepper
2 tablespoons toasted sesame seeds

Steps:

  • Cook onion and garlic in oil in 2- to 3-quart saucepan over medium heat until onion is tender.
  • Add broth, rice, soy sauce and pepper flakes. Bring to a boil; stir once or twice. Cover and simmer 15 minutes or until rice is tender and liquid is absorbed.
  • Stir green onions, red pepper and sesame seeds into cooked rice; cover and let stand 5 minutes. Fluff with fork.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality ingredients: This will make a big difference in the flavor of your rice pilaf. Look for long-grain rice, such as basmati or jasmine, and fresh vegetables.
  • Toast the rice before cooking: This will help to give it a nutty flavor and prevent it from sticking together.
  • Use a flavorful broth: Chicken broth, vegetable broth, or even water can be used to cook rice pilaf. However, using a flavorful broth will add more depth of flavor to the dish.
  • Add vegetables and other ingredients: Rice pilaf is a great way to use up leftover vegetables. You can also add nuts, dried fruits, or herbs to the dish.
  • Cook the rice pilaf until it is tender: The rice should be cooked through but still have a slight bite to it. Overcooked rice pilaf will be mushy.

Conclusion:

Oriental rice pilaf is a delicious and versatile dish that can be served as a main course or a side dish. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. With its fragrant aroma and flavorful ingredients, oriental rice pilaf is sure to be a hit with your family and friends.
