Yield Serves 4 to 6

Number Of Ingredients 6

4 small tomatoes, cut crosswise into 1/4-inch-thick slices
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1 baguette, halved lengthwise
6 ounces extra-sharp cheddar cheese, thinly sliced

Steps:

  • Preheat broiler. Arrange tomatoes in a single layer on a rimmed baking sheet. Drizzle with 3 tablespoons oil, and season with salt and pepper. Broil until tomatoes are soft, about 5 minutes.
  • Melt butter with remaining tablespoon oil. Brush over cut sides of bread. Broil until top edges are just golden.
  • Arrange tomatoes over bread, slightly overlapping. Top with cheese. Place on baking sheet; broil until cheese has melted and is bubbling, 1 to 2 minutes.

Tips:

  • Stale or day-old bread: For the best grilled cheese sandwich, use stale or day-old bread. Fresh bread is too soft and will become soggy when grilled.
  • Thick-cut bread: Thick-cut bread will hold up better to the grilling process and will give you a more satisfying sandwich.
  • Spread butter or mayonnaise on the outside of the bread: This will help the bread to brown evenly and will give the sandwich a crispy crust.
  • Use plenty of cheese: Grilled cheese sandwiches are all about the cheese, so don't be shy about using plenty of it. A good rule of thumb is to use about 1/2 cup of cheese per sandwich.
  • Add other ingredients: Feel free to add other ingredients to your grilled cheese sandwich, such as sliced tomatoes, bacon, avocado, or ham. Just be sure not to overload the sandwich, or it will become difficult to grill.
  • Grill the sandwich over medium heat: Grilling the sandwich over medium heat will help to prevent the bread from burning and will allow the cheese to melt evenly.
  • Cook the sandwich until the cheese is melted and bubbly: The sandwich is ready when the cheese is melted and bubbly and the bread is golden brown.

Conclusion:

Grilled cheese sandwiches are a classic comfort food that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With a few simple tips, you can make a grilled cheese sandwich that is perfectly crispy, cheesy, and delicious. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal, give grilled cheese sandwiches a try!
