This is a quick and easy main dish. My kids don't even like cabbage, but they love this. I usually try to serve it with green beans, new potatoes, corn, and a pan of corn bread. They eat over half the pan every time. Also, the longer it stands the better it tastes.

Tips:

  • Choose the right cabbage: Select a large, firm head of cabbage that is heavy for its size. Avoid heads that have any signs of damage or wilting.
  • Core the cabbage properly: Use a sharp knife to cut out the core of the cabbage. Be careful not to cut too deep, as this will make it difficult to hold the cabbage together.
  • Chop the cabbage evenly: Cut the cabbage into 1-inch pieces. This will ensure that the cabbage cooks evenly.
  • Brown the cabbage before adding the other ingredients: This will help to develop the flavor of the cabbage and prevent it from becoming mushy.
  • Use a variety of vegetables: Feel free to add other vegetables to the pot, such as carrots, celery, or potatoes. This will make the dish more colorful and nutritious.
  • Season the dish to taste: Add salt, pepper, and other seasonings to taste. You can also add a bit of chili powder or cayenne pepper for a spicy kick.
  • Serve the dish hot: One-pot unstuffed cabbage is best served hot. You can garnish it with fresh parsley or cilantro.
