OLD-FASHIONED APPLESAUCE

Old-Fashioned Applesauce image

We had all kinds of apple trees in the yard when I was growing up, so I don't know for sure which ones Mother liked best for applesauce. (Today I use Cortlands.) I do know that her applesauce was very white. The secret, she said, was to keep the apples in salt water while she peeled them so that they wouldn't darken. -Doris Natvig, Jesup, Iowa

Yield 6 cups.

Number Of Ingredients 4

4 pounds tart apples
1 cup water

Add sugar to taste and stir until dissolved. If you used a cinnamon stick, remove and discard. Mash apples with a potato masher until desired texture is reached. Serve warm or chilled.

OLD FASHIONED APPLESAUCE SPICE CAKE

I found this recipe on a Duncan Hines spice cake mix box. It was easy to make. It was not too sweet, but sweet enough! I used chunky applesauce & I did not frost the cake -- I just sprinkled it with cinnamon sugar, but the frosting sounds good too.

OLD FASHIONED HOMEMADE APPLESAUCE CAKE.

Old Fashioned Homemade Applesauce Cake. image

If you make your own homemade applesauce than this is the cake recipe for you. Using store-bought just will not work ( I tried, very dry and hard result). But with the homemade this is a very moist, delicous and versatile cake, I have served it plain sans icing, iced it with my grandmothers butterscotch icing or vanilla or cream cheese icings, all with rave reviews. So if you've got a couple cups of left over applesauce give it a try!

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples: For the best applesauce, use a variety of apples that are firm and tart, such as Granny Smith, Braeburn, or Honeycrisp.
  • Peel and core the apples: Peeling the apples will help to remove any unwanted blemishes or bruises, and coring them will remove the seeds and stem.
  • Use a food processor or blender: A food processor or blender will make quick work of pureeing the apples.
  • Add sugar or spices to taste: If you like your applesauce sweet, add sugar to taste. You can also add spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger for a more flavorful applesauce.
  • Cook the applesauce until it reaches your desired consistency: The longer you cook the applesauce, the thicker it will become. If you like your applesauce chunky, cook it for a shorter amount of time. If you like it smooth, cook it for longer.

Conclusion:

Old-fashioned applesauce is a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed in many different ways. It can be served as a side dish, a snack, or even a dessert. It can also be used as an ingredient in other dishes, such as pies, cakes, and muffins.
