Time 35m

Yield 20

Number Of Ingredients 12

5 cups rolled oats
1 cup blanched slivered almonds
1 cup chopped walnuts
1 cup chopped pecans
1 cup sesame seeds
1 cup wheat germ
2 cups shredded coconut
1 cup unsalted sunflower seeds
1 cup canola oil
1 ½ cups honey
1 cup raisins
1 cup dried cranberries

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).
  • In a large bowl, stir together the oats, almonds, walnuts, pecans, sesame seeds, wheat germ, coconut and sunflower seeds. In a small pan over medium heat, stir together the oil and honey. Cook and stir until blended. You could also do this in a large measuring cup in the microwave, heating for about 2 minutes and 30 seconds. Pour over the oat mixture, and stir to coat evenly. Spread out in an even layer on two cookie sheets.
  • Bake for 20 minutes in the preheated oven, until the oats and nuts are toasted. Immediately after it comes out of the oven, stir in the raisins and dried cranberries. Let stand until cooled, and stir again to break up any large clusters. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to two weeks, but I guarantee it won't be around that long!

Tips:

  • Choose high-quality ingredients: Use rolled oats, wheat germ, nuts, and seeds that are fresh and free of rancidity. Avoid using processed or refined sugars, as they can compromise the nutritional value of your granola.
  • Adjust the sweetness to your preference: This recipe calls for a moderate amount of honey, but you can adjust it to your liking. If you prefer a sweeter granola, add more honey or maple syrup. You can also use a combination of honey and coconut sugar for a more complex flavor.
  • Customize your granola with mix-ins: Feel free to add your favorite mix-ins to this granola. Some popular choices include dried fruits, such as raisins, cranberries, or cherries; chopped nuts, such as almonds, walnuts, or pecans; and seeds, such as sunflower seeds, chia seeds, or flax seeds. You can also add spices, such as cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger, to enhance the flavor.
  • Toast the oats and wheat germ: Toasting the oats and wheat germ before baking brings out their flavor and gives the granola a more complex texture. If you don't have time to toast them, you can skip this step, but your granola may not have as much depth of flavor.
  • Store your granola properly: Once your granola is baked, let it cool completely before storing it in an airtight container. Store your granola in a cool, dry place, such as a pantry or cupboard. Properly stored granola can last for up to two weeks.

Conclusion:

This oat and wheat germ granola is a delicious and healthy breakfast or snack option. It's packed with whole grains, nuts, and seeds, and can be customized to your liking. With its crunchy texture and sweet flavor, this granola is sure to please everyone at the table. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy breakfast or snack, give this oat and wheat germ granola a try.
