Two 28-ounce cans whole peeled tomatoes, crushed by hand
1 1/2 cups vegetable broth
1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves
1/2 stick (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter

  • Heat the oil in a large heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat. Add the celery, onions, garlic and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
