NUT AND DATE PIE CRUST (PALEO) RECIPE - (4.8/5)

Nut and Date Pie Crust (Paleo) Recipe - (4.8/5) image

Provided by mdancause

Number Of Ingredients 7

Crust
2 1/2 cups raw mixed nuts (I used a combination of cashews, pecans, almonds, and hazelnuts)
1/2 cup chilled pitted dates
1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
1/2 tsp sea salt
1 tsp baking soda
2 Tbsp melted butter

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Place nuts in food processor and process until finely ground. Add remaining crust ingredients and pulse several times until dates are finely chopped, all ingredients are well integrated, and the nut dough can be pressed together. (Be sure not to go too long or you will end up with nut butter. Tasty, yes, but not what we're going for here!) Transfer to a 9-inch pie dish or tart pan. Press the dough firmly on the bottom and sides to form a crust. You may have just a little left over.

Tips:

  • Choose the right nuts: Use a variety of nuts for a more complex flavor and texture. Walnuts, pecans, and almonds are all good choices.
  • Toast the nuts: Toasting the nuts before using them will bring out their flavor and make them more fragrant.
  • Use a food processor: A food processor is the easiest way to grind the nuts into a fine meal.
  • Don't overwork the dough: Overworking the dough will make it tough. Mix it just until it comes together.
  • Chill the dough before rolling it out: Chilling the dough will make it easier to roll out and will help prevent it from cracking.
  • Use a pie plate with a removable bottom: This will make it easier to remove the pie from the pan.
  • Bake the pie until the crust is golden brown: The filling should be bubbling and the crust should be cooked through.

Conclusion:

Nut pie crusts are a delicious and versatile way to add flavor and texture to your favorite pies. With a few simple tips, you can make a perfect nut pie crust every time. So next time you're looking for a new way to dress up your pies, give a nut pie crust a try. You won't be disappointed!
