**Not-Very-Sloppy Sloppy Joes**

Sloppy Joes are a classic American comfort food, but they can be messy to eat. This recipe for Not-Very-Sloppy Sloppy Joes is a healthier, less messy version of the classic dish. The sloppy joe mixture is made with ground turkey, bell peppers, onions, and a homemade sloppy joe sauce. The sauce is made with ketchup, tomato paste, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, and spices. The sloppy joe mixture is then spooned onto slider buns and topped with cheese. The sliders are then baked until the cheese is melted and bubbly. This recipe also includes two other versions of sloppy joes: a vegetarian sloppy joe made with lentils, and a spicy sloppy joe made with ground beef. All three recipes are easy to make and perfect for a casual weeknight meal.

NOT VERY SLOPPY SLOPPY JOES

Not Very Sloppy Sloppy Joes image

I was hungry for Sloppy Joes and didn't have any hamburger buns but I had Grand's Biscuits. I really believe you can do anything if you have biscuits in the refrigerator. Well if I don't say so myself these turned out pretty yummy.

Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 lb 93% ground beef
1 1/4 c cheese, shredded
1 can(s) pillsbury grands
your favorite sloppy joe recpie

Steps:

  • 1. Line a large baking sheet with non stick aluminum foil and pre heat the oven to 350. I don't like cleaning cookie sheets. :)
  • 2. Brown and crumble the hamburger until it is fully cooked.
  • 3. Make your favorite sloppy joe recipe or open a can of Manwhich. Sometimes that is not so bad for quick kids lunch. Cook mixture until hot and flavors have blended.
  • 4. Now for the fun part! Pull the biscuits and flatten until they are about 4-5 inches across. Put about 2 heaping tablespoons of filling in the middle and top with shredded cheese. I used sharp cheddar. Now fold one side over to meet the other side and press them together. Use a fork to crimp the edges and to make sure they will be closed. Bake 15-20 at 350 until golden brown.

THE BEST SLOPPY JOES

The Best Sloppy Joes image

This is weeknight comfort food at its finest. We created a homemade sauce that is tangy and flavorful but also quick and easy. We used both ketchup and canned tomato sauce for lots of tomato-y zip and just a touch of brown sugar for a bit of sweetness and slight caramel finish. Green bell pepper is a key addition; it really enhances the other ingredients, elevating the flavor profile into the realm of a true sloppy joe.

Number Of Ingredients 21

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil, 1 turn of the pan
1 1/4 pounds ground beef sirloin
1/4 cup brown sugar
2 teaspoons to 1 tablespoon steak seasoning blend, such as McCormick brand Montreal Seasoning
1 medium onion, chopped
1 small red bell pepper, chopped
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 cups tomato sauce
2 tablespoons tomato paste
4 crusty rolls, split, toasted, and lightly buttered
Garnish: sliced ripe tomatoes, pickles, Deviled Potato Salad, recipe follows
5 all-purpose potatoes, peeled and diced
Coarse salt
1/4 onion
3 tablespoons prepared yellow mustard
1/2 cup mayonnaise, eyeball the amount
1 teaspoon sweet paprika
1 teaspoon hot cayenne pepper sauce (recommended: Tabasco or Frank's Red Hot)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
2 scallions, thinly sliced, for garnish

Steps:

  • Heat a large skillet over medium high heat. Add oil and meat to the pan. Spread the meat around the pan and begin to break it up. Combine brown sugar and steak seasoning. Add sugar and spice mixture to the skillet and combine. When the meat has browned, add onion and red peppers to the skillet. Reduce heat to medium and cook onions, peppers, red wine vinegar and Worcestershire sauce with meat for 5 minutes. Add tomato sauce and paste to pan. Stir to combine. Reduce heat to simmer and cook Sloppy Joe mixture 5 minutes longer. Using a large spoon or ice cream scoop, pile sloppy meat onto toasted, buttered bun bottoms and cover with bun tops. Serve with your favorite sides or sliced tomatoes seasoned with salt and pepper, dill pickles and Deviled Potato Salad. Have plenty of napkins on hand!
  • Boil potatoes in water seasoned with coarse salt until they are tender, about 10 minutes. Drain cooked potatoes and return to the warm pot to dry them out. Let the potatoes stand 2 minutes, then spread potatoes out on to a cookie sheet to quick-cool them.
  • In the bottom of a medium mixing bowl, grate 1/4 onion using a hand grater. Add mustard and mayonnaise, paprika and cayenne pepper sauce to the grated onion and stir to combine. Add potatoes to the bowl and stir to evenly distribute dressing. Season potato salad with salt and pepper and taste to adjust your seasonings. Top servings of salad with chopped scallions.

HOMEMADE SLOPPY JOES

Homemade Sloppy Joes image

Despite the name of this iconic retro dish, the secret to a great sloppy joe is a thick, rich, almost dry consistency, which allows the sandwich to be eaten with your hands. Serve on hamburger buns.

1 ½ pounds extra lean ground beef
½ onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup water
¾ cup ketchup
1 dash Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 ½ teaspoons salt, or to taste
½ teaspoon ground black pepper

  • Stir in garlic and green bell pepper; cook and stir until softened, 2 to 3 minutes. Add 1 cup water and stir, scraping the pan to dissolve any brown flavor bits from the bottom of the skillet.

NEAT SLOPPY JOES

Neat Sloppy Joes image

No green pepper in this recipe, so it's a hit with kids. We added this to the menu at a children's camp, and it has been a favorite for several years. The mixture is thick, so they are 'neat' rather than sloppy. This freezes and reheats well.

Time 50m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 pounds lean ground beef
½ cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped celery
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed tomato soup
¼ cup ketchup
1 tablespoon white vinegar
¼ cup packed brown sugar
1 ½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon garlic powder
8 hamburger buns

Steps:

  • Place ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook until evenly browned, stirring to crumble. I like to use a potato masher to even out the lumps. Add onion and celery, cover the pan, and cook until tender and transparent, about 5 minutes. Drain off any grease.
  • Stir the tomato soup (undiluted), ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce into the beef mixture. Season with salt and garlic powder. Heat to a simmer over low heat, and cook until thoroughly heated, stirring frequently to prevent it from burning on the bottom.
  • Spoon the hot beef mixture onto buns, which may be toasted first, and serve.

ground black pepper to taste

Steps:

Tips:

  • Utilize a Food Processor: Save time and effort by using a food processor to finely chop the bell pepper and onion. This will ensure an even distribution of these vegetables throughout your Sloppy Joes.
  • Choose Your Buns Wisely: Opt for sturdier buns, such as potato or hoagie rolls, to hold up to the Sloppy Joe filling. Toasted buns add an extra layer of flavor and texture.
  • Customize the Taste: Adjust the seasonings to suit your preferences. Add more chili powder for a spicier kick, or increase the Worcestershire sauce for a deeper savory flavor.
  • Don't Overcook the Meat: Keep an eye on the ground beef while cooking to prevent overcooking. Overcooked beef can become dry and tough, compromising the texture of your Sloppy Joes.
  • Drain the Fat: Before adding the sauce to the ground beef, drain any excess fat to reduce the greasiness of the dish.
  • Simmer for Flavor: Allow the Sloppy Joe mixture to simmer for at least 15 minutes, or longer if time permits. This allows the flavors to meld and develop, resulting in a richer and more complex taste.
  • Add Some Crunch: For a textural contrast, top your Sloppy Joes with crispy fried onions or a sprinkle of crushed potato chips.
