Yield 12 servings

Number Of Ingredients 6

One 8- to 10-pound bone-in fully cooked ham
1/4 cup whole cloves
1 cup honey
1 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
3/4 cup fresh orange juice
1/4 cup (4 tablespoons) unsalted butter

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.
  • Place the ham in a roasting pan, fat side up. Score the ham in diamond shapes with a sharp knife. Insert the cloves in the center of each diamond. Bake until a meat thermometer registers 140 degrees F when inserted in the thickest portion (avoiding bone), 18 to 20 minutes per pound.
  • Meanwhile, make the glaze. Combine the honey, brown sugar, orange juice and butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a simmer and cook until the sugar dissolves, about 2 minutes.
  • Remove the ham from the oven. Increase the oven temperature to 375 degrees F.
  • Remove about 2 tablespoons pan drippings from the roasting pan and add to the glaze. Whisk to combine. Pour the glaze over the ham. Return the ham to the oven and continue baking, basting with the pan juices frequently, until the ham is browned, about 20 more minutes. Slice the ham and serve with the pan juices, if desired.

Tips

  • Choose the right ham. Look for a bone-in ham that is fully cooked and weighs between 10 and 12 pounds. This will yield enough ham for 10-12 people.
  • Score the ham. Using a sharp knife, score the ham in a diamond pattern, cutting through the fat and down to the meat. This will help the glaze penetrate the ham and create a crispy crust.
  • Make the glaze. Combine orange juice, brown sugar, honey, Dijon mustard, and ginger in a saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring constantly. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes, or until the glaze has thickened.
  • Glaze the ham. Brush the ham with the glaze, making sure to get it into all the scored lines. Bake the ham in a preheated oven at 325 degrees F for 30 minutes, or until the glaze is golden brown and bubbly.
  • Let the ham rest. Remove the ham from the oven and let it rest for 15 minutes before carving. This will allow the juices to redistribute and make the ham easier to carve.

Nona's Orange Glazed Easter Ham is a delicious and festive dish that is perfect for a special occasion. The sweet and tangy glaze pairs perfectly with the salty ham, and the crispy crust adds a nice texture.
