**Nine-Day Slaw: A Tangy and Refreshing Summer Treat**

Nine-Day Slaw is a classic summer salad that is both refreshing and flavorful. The secret to this dish is the dressing, which is made with a combination of vinegar, sugar, mustard, and celery seeds. The dressing is poured over a mixture of shredded cabbage, carrots, and onions, and then the slaw is left to marinate for at least nine days. This allows the flavors to meld together and develop, resulting in a tangy and delicious salad. This article provides three different recipes for Nine-Day Slaw, each with its own unique twist. The first recipe is a traditional Nine-Day Slaw, made with a vinegar-based dressing. The second recipe is a Creamy Nine-Day Slaw, which uses a mayonnaise-based dressing. The third recipe is a Sweet and Spicy Nine-Day Slaw, which is made with a dressing that includes honey and Sriracha sauce. All three recipes are easy to follow and can be made in advance, making them a great option for potlucks and picnics.

NINE-DAY SLAW RECIPE - (4.5/5)

Number Of Ingredients 11

Slaw:
3 pounds cabbage, shredded
1 medium onion, finely chopped
1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
2 cups sugar
Dressing:
1 cup vinegar (white or cider)
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons celery seed
2 teaspoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, combine cabbage, onion, bell pepper and 2 cups of sugar. Allow to stand a few minutes until sugar is dissolved. In a small sauce pan, combine vinegar, oil, celery seed, 2 teaspoons sugar and salt. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Remove from stove and allow to cool. Pour over the cabbage mixture, mix well and refrigerate. This slaw will keep well in the refrigerator for nine days, but here's my little secret: It will keep even longer than that in the freezer.

Tips:

  • Use a sharp knife or mandoline to thinly slice the cabbage. This will help the slaw to absorb the dressing better.
  • Shred the cabbage instead of slicing it. This will create more surface area for the dressing to cling to.
  • Use a combination of white and red cabbage for a more colorful slaw.
  • Add other vegetables to the slaw, such as shredded carrots, celery, or bell pepper. This will add more flavor and texture.
  • Use a variety of dressings for the slaw. A simple vinegar-based dressing is a classic, but you can also try a creamy dressing, a mayonnaise-based dressing, or a tangy Asian-inspired dressing.
  • Let the slaw marinate for at least 30 minutes before serving. This will allow the flavors to meld together and the slaw to become more flavorful.
  • Serve the slaw as a side dish or as a topping for sandwiches, tacos, or burgers.

Conclusion:

Nine-day slaw is a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed in many different ways. With its simple ingredients and easy preparation, it's a great option for busy weeknights or potlucks. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy side dish, give nine-day slaw a try!
