THE BEST SLOPPY JOES

The Best Sloppy Joes image

This is weeknight comfort food at its finest. We created a homemade sauce that is tangy and flavorful but also quick and easy. We used both ketchup and canned tomato sauce for lots of tomato-y zip and just a touch of brown sugar for a bit of sweetness and slight caramel finish. Green bell pepper is a key addition; it really enhances the other ingredients, elevating the flavor profile into the realm of a true sloppy joe.

Time 30m

Yield 4 to 6 sandwiches

Number Of Ingredients 15

2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 medium onion, diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 pound lean ground beef
12 ounces (1 1/3 cup) tomato sauce
3/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
1 teaspoon paprika
Pinch of cayenne pepper
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
6 hamburger buns, toasted

Steps:

  • Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and starting to caramelize in some spots, 6 to 7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the beef and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon or spatula, until it is browned, no longer pink in the middle and cooked through, 7 to 8 minutes.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, red wine vinegar, paprika, cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon salt and a generous amount of black pepper and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened and heated through, 5 to 6 minutes. Spoon the meat onto the toasted buns.

NEAT SLOPPY JOES

No green pepper in this recipe, so it's a hit with kids. We added this to the menu at a children's camp, and it has been a favorite for several years. The mixture is thick, so they are 'neat' rather than sloppy. This freezes and reheats well.

Time 50m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 pounds lean ground beef
½ cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped celery
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed tomato soup
¼ cup ketchup
1 tablespoon white vinegar
¼ cup packed brown sugar
1 ½ teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon garlic powder
8 hamburger buns

Steps:

  • Place ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat. Cook until evenly browned, stirring to crumble. I like to use a potato masher to even out the lumps. Add onion and celery, cover the pan, and cook until tender and transparent, about 5 minutes. Drain off any grease.
  • Stir the tomato soup (undiluted), ketchup, vinegar, brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce into the beef mixture. Season with salt and garlic powder. Heat to a simmer over low heat, and cook until thoroughly heated, stirring frequently to prevent it from burning on the bottom.
  • Spoon the hot beef mixture onto buns, which may be toasted first, and serve.

Despite the name of this iconic retro dish, the secret to a great sloppy joe is a thick, rich, almost dry consistency, which allows the sandwich to be eaten with your hands. Serve on hamburger buns.

Time 1h10m

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 ½ pounds extra lean ground beef
½ onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 green pepper, diced
1 cup water
¾ cup ketchup
1 dash Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1 ½ teaspoons salt, or to taste
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
1 cup water
1 pinch cayenne pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Place ground beef and onion in a large skillet. Turn heat to medium and cook and stir the mixture constantly until the beef is browned and forms small crumbles, about 10 minutes.
  • Stir in garlic and green bell pepper; cook and stir until softened, 2 to 3 minutes. Add 1 cup water and stir, scraping the pan to dissolve any brown flavor bits from the bottom of the skillet.
  • Mix in ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, salt, and black pepper. Add 1 more cup water and return mixture to a simmer. Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until the liquid has evaporated and the mixture is thick, about 40 minutes.

Tips:

  • Use a variety of ground meats. This will give your sloppy joes more flavor and texture. Ground beef, ground pork, and ground turkey are all good options.
  • Don't overcook the meat. Overcooked meat will be tough and dry. Cook it just until it is browned and no longer pink in the center.
  • Use a good quality barbecue sauce. The barbecue sauce is the key to flavor in sloppy joes. Choose a sauce that you like the taste of and that has a good balance of sweetness, acidity, and smokiness.
  • Add other ingredients to your sloppy joes. This is a great way to customize them to your liking. Some popular additions include chopped onions, green peppers, celery, and pickles.
  • Serve sloppy joes on a variety of breads. Hamburger buns, hoagie rolls, and slider buns are all good options. You can also serve them on top of mashed potatoes or rice.

Conclusion:

Sloppy joes are a classic American comfort food that is easy to make and loved by people of all ages. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can make delicious sloppy joes that will be a hit at your next party or gathering. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal, give sloppy joes a try. You won't be disappointed!
