Time 45m

Number Of Ingredients 7

5 c apples, skinned and sliced
1/3 c water
1 c granulated sugar
3/4 c all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon (I use more because I love cinnamon)
1/4 tsp salt
1 stick butter, cut into small slices

Steps:

  • 1. Heat oven to 350 and butter a baking dish. (For this recipe I stick to the butter but you can use something else to grease pan if you prefer.)
  • 2. Put apples in dish and spread out. Sprinkle apples with water.
  • 3. Put flour, sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl. Add butter to this with your fingers rubbing till it all resembles a coarse crumby mixture.
  • 4. Spread this over the apples in the dish.
  • 5. Bake for about 30 minutes. Just until the crust is browned nicely.

THE BEST APPLE CRUMBLE

You can't beat a traditional apple filling topped with crispy, buttery crumble - classic comfort food at its best

Provided by Good Food team

Categories     Dessert, Treat

Time 55m

Number Of Ingredients 8

575g Bramley apple (3 medium apples), peeled, cored and sliced to 1cm thick
2 tbsp golden caster sugar
175g plain flour
110g golden caster sugar
110g cold butter
1 tbsp rolled oats
1 tbsp demerara sugar
double cream , clotted cream or custard, to serve

Steps:

  • Heat the oven to 190C/170 fan/gas 5.
  • Toss 575g peeled, cored and sliced Bramley apples with 2 tbsp golden caster sugar and put in a 23cm round baking dish at least 5cm deep, or a 20cm square dish. Flatten down with your hand to prevent too much crumble falling through.
  • Put 175g plain flour and 110g golden caster sugar in a bowl with a good pinch of salt.
  • Slice in 110g cold butter and rub it in with your fingertips until the mixture looks like moist breadcrumbs. Shake the bowl and any big bits will come to the surface - rub them in. Alternatively, pulse in a processor until sandy (don't over-process).
  • Pour the crumb mix over the apples to form a pile in the centre, then use a fork to even out.
  • Gently press the surface with the back of the fork so the crumble holds together and goes crisp, then lightly drag the fork over the top for a decorative finish.
  • Sprinkle 1 tbsp rolled oats and 1 tbsp demerara sugar over evenly, if you wish.
  • Set on a baking tray and put in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, until the top is golden and the apples feel very soft when you insert a small, sharp knife. Leave to cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Tips:

  • Choose ripe and flavorful fruits. This will ensure that your crumble is packed with flavor. If using apples, opt for a firm variety that will hold its shape well when baked, such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp.
  • Use a variety of spices. This will add depth and complexity to the flavor of your crumble. Common spices used in apple crumble include cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.
  • Don't overmix the crumble topping. Overmixing will make the topping tough. Instead, mix the ingredients together until they are just combined.
  • Bake the crumble until the topping is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling. This will ensure that the crumble is cooked through.

Conclusion:

Apple crumble is a classic dessert that is easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser. With its sweet and tart filling and crispy topping, it's the perfect way to enjoy the flavors of fall. Whether you're serving it with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream, apple crumble is sure to be a hit.
