GRILLED HAVARTI SANDWICH WITH SPICED APPLES

Grilled Havarti Sandwich With Spiced Apples image

Posting for ZWT6. A variation from thenibble.com And after making myself I DID reduce the butter as Kim127 suggested. And after looking at momaphet's review and the original recipe I did reduce the sugar amount. Thank you both. Also think the caramelized onion is a wonderful suggestion.

Time 10m

Yield 1 sandwich

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 piece ciabatta sandwich bread, about 4 1/2 inches long
2 large slices havarti cheese, sliced thin
3 large slices prosciutto
1/2 Fuji apple, cored and sliced into half-moons 1/8 inch thick
1 1/2 teaspoons butter

Steps:

  • Split ciabatta, and place one slice of cheese on one half. Top with prosciutto, followed by apple slices, the second slice of cheese and the other half of the bread.
  • Melt butter in a 9-inch skillet over medium-high heat. When it froths vigorously, transfer sandwich to skillet. Place a grill press or a cast iron skillet on top of sandwich, and apply gentle pressure for about 2 1/2 minutes. With a spatula, carefully flip sandwich, replace grill press, apply pressure and grill 2 minutes more. Let cool. Place in sandwich bag, and store in refrigerator.

Tips:

  • Choose the right cheese: Havarti cheese is a semi-soft cheese with a mild, buttery flavor that melts well. It is a good choice for grilled cheese sandwiches because it doesn't overpower the other ingredients.
  • Use ripe apples: Ripe apples are sweeter and have a more complex flavor than unripe apples. They also hold their shape better when cooked.
  • Slice the apples thinly: Thinly sliced apples will cook more evenly and quickly.
  • Use a good quality bread: A sturdy bread that can hold up to the grilled cheese sandwich is best. Some good choices include sourdough, whole wheat, or French bread.
  • Butter the bread: Buttering the bread will help it to brown and crisp up in the pan.
  • Cook the sandwich over medium heat: Cooking the sandwich over medium heat will help it to cook evenly and prevent the cheese from burning.
  • Cover the pan while cooking: Covering the pan while cooking will help the cheese to melt more quickly.
  • Serve the sandwich immediately: Grilled cheese sandwiches are best served immediately after they are made.

Conclusion:

The grilled Havarti cheese and spiced apple sandwich is a delicious and easy-to-make sandwich that is perfect for a quick lunch or dinner. The combination of sweet apples, melted Havarti cheese, and warm spices is sure to please everyone.
