CLASSIC APPLESAUCE

Classic Applesauce image

McIntosh apples make a traditional applesauce, but using a mix of varieties gives dimension. You can stir in up to three tablespoons dark-brown sugar, if you like.

Provided by Martha Stewart

Categories     Food & Cooking     Healthy Recipes     Gluten-Free Recipes

Time 45m

Yield Makes 6 cups

Number Of Ingredients 3

4 pounds apples, such as McIntosh, Gala, and Braeburn
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice (from 2 lemons)
3 tablespoons dark-brown sugar (optional)

Steps:

  • Peel, core, and slice apples.
  • In a large pot, bring apples, lemon juice, and 1 1/2 cups water to a boil over high. Reduce heat and simmer until apples are very soft and falling apart, 25 to 30 minutes.
  • Mash with a potato masher or pulse in a food processor until smooth with small chunks remaining. (Add sugar, if using.)
  • Let cool, then transfer applesauce to airtight containers.

Nutrition Facts : Calories 80 g, Fiber 4 g

Tips:

  • Choose the right apples: Use a variety of apples that will hold their shape when baked, such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Braeburn. Avoid using soft apples, such as McIntosh or Red Delicious, as they will turn to mush during baking.
  • Don't overcook the sweet potatoes: Sweet potatoes should be fork-tender, but not mushy. Overcooked sweet potatoes will make the casserole too soft and runny.
  • Use a good quality applesauce: Homemade applesauce is always best, but you can also use a store-bought brand that you like. Make sure the applesauce is unsweetened, or only lightly sweetened.
  • Add spices to taste: Feel free to add spices to the casserole, such as cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger. This will give the casserole a warm and inviting flavor.
  • Serve warm: This casserole is best served warm, right out of the oven. You can also make it ahead of time and reheat it before serving.

Conclusion:

This applesauce sweet potato bake is a delicious and comforting dish that is perfect for a fall or winter meal. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste. Whether you like it spicy or sweet, this casserole is sure to please everyone at the table.
