MUSTARD & ONION RELISH

Mustard & Onion Relish image

Serve hot or cold with sausages, burgers, steak or anything else you have on your BBQ. I was clearing out all the supermarket recipe leaflets and cards and all the cut out recipes that kept piling up in my kitchen. I thought I'd post the ones that I liked the look and sound of here, to share and for future reference. This way you might find something you like and my kitchen gets decluttered! If you try it before me let me know what you think. From Tesco's 'Food Club' magazine.

Time 20m

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
3 onions, peeled and sliced
1 garlic clove, minced
3 tablespoons dark brown sugar (Muscovado)
4 tablespoons red wine vinegar
2 teaspoons coarse grain mustard
salt and pepper, to taste

Steps:

  • Fry rhe onions in the oil over a medium heat until soft and brown.
  • Add the garlic and cook for another minute, before adding the sugar, vinegar and mustard.
  • Bring to a boil and cook for 2-3 minutes until it starts to thicken.
  • Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Can be served hot or cold.

Tips:

  • Choose the right onions: Yellow or white onions are best for this recipe, as they have a milder flavor than red onions. Be sure to thinly slice the onions so that they cook evenly.
  • Use good-quality mustard: The type of mustard you use will greatly affect the flavor of the relish. Choose a mustard that you enjoy the taste of, such as yellow mustard, Dijon mustard, or brown mustard.
  • Add some sweetness: To balance out the sharpness of the mustard and onions, add a touch of sweetness to the relish. This can be done with sugar, honey, or maple syrup.
  • Season to taste: Once the relish is cooked, taste it and adjust the seasonings as needed. You may want to add more salt, pepper, or vinegar to suit your taste.
  • Experiment with different variations: There are many ways to customize this recipe to your liking. Try adding different herbs, spices, or vegetables, such as garlic, celery, or carrots.

Conclusion:

Mustard onion relish is a delicious and versatile condiment that can be used in a variety of ways. It's perfect for hot dogs, hamburgers, sandwiches, and wraps.
