Time P1DT30m

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 lbs catfish
12 ounces yellow mustard
1 egg
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
canola oil or peanut oil

Steps:

  • THE DAY BEFORE - combine the mustard with egg and add the catfish.
  • Cover and marinate overnight.
  • The next day, place enough oil in an 8 quart saucepan or dutch oven (or fryer) to hold the catfish fillets in two batches (up to eight cups of oil).
  • Heat oil to 360 degrees.
  • Mix the dry ingredients and spices together.
  • Roll the catfish fillets in the dry mix.
  • Shake off the excess and fry about 5 minutes until golden brown.
  • Drain and serve hot.

Tips:

  • Choose fresh catfish fillets that are firm and have a mild, sweet flavor.
  • If you can't find catfish fillets, you can use another mild-flavored fish, such as tilapia or cod.
  • To make the mustard sauce, use a good-quality Dijon mustard. This will give the sauce a rich, flavorful taste.
  • If you don't have heavy cream, you can use milk instead. However, the sauce will be thinner.
  • To get a crispy crust on the catfish, be sure to coat it evenly in the mustard sauce before frying.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan when frying the catfish. This will cause the fish to steam instead of fry.
  • Serve the catfish immediately with your favorite sides, such as mashed potatoes, green beans, or coleslaw.

Conclusion:

Mustard catfish is a delicious and easy-to-make dish that is perfect for a weeknight meal. The mustard sauce is flavorful and creamy, and the catfish is crispy on the outside and flaky on the inside. Serve with your favorite sides for a complete meal that the whole family will enjoy.
