Tips:

  • Choose the right mushrooms. Use flavorful mushrooms like shiitake, portobello, or cremini mushrooms. Fresh mushrooms are best, but dried mushrooms can also be used. If using dried mushrooms, soak them in hot water for 20 minutes before using.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan. When cooking the mushrooms, don't overcrowd the pan. This will prevent them from cooking evenly and will make them more likely to steam rather than brown.
  • Cook the mushrooms until they're golden brown. Cook the mushrooms over medium-high heat until they're golden brown and slightly caramelized. This will give them a rich, nutty flavor.
  • Use a good quality ham. Use a flavorful, high-quality ham for the best results. Black Forest ham or smoked ham are both good choices.
  • Cook the pasta al dente. Cook the pasta according to the package directions, but be careful not to overcook it. Pasta should be cooked al dente, which means it should be slightly firm to the bite.
  • Use a flavorful cheese. Use a flavorful cheese like Parmesan or Asiago cheese for the sauce. Grated Parmesan cheese is a classic choice, but you can also use a mixture of different cheeses.
  • Serve immediately. Serve the mushroom ham fettuccine immediately while the pasta is still hot and the sauce is creamy. Garnish with fresh parsley or chives for a pop of color and flavor.
