MOM'S WONTON

Mom's Wonton image

I recently learned to make homemade won tons from my mother. They can be deep fried as an appetizer, but I prefer them in a rich, homemade chicken broth with baby bok choy or other leafy greens. Extras will freeze well for later enjoyment.

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 15

½ pound ground pork
¾ pound cooked shrimp, shelled, deveined and coarsely chopped
2 tablespoons minced green onions
1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger root
2 tablespoons chopped water chestnuts
1 teaspoon cornstarch
¼ teaspoon garlic salt
1 pinch white sugar
1 tablespoon dry sherry
1 teaspoon chili oil
1 tablespoon soy sauce
¼ teaspoon sesame oil
1 (16 ounce) package wonton skins
1 pinch garlic salt
1 egg white

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook the ground pork over medium heat until no longer pink.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the shrimp, ground pork, green onions, ginger, and water chestnuts. Mix in the cornstarch, garlic salt, and sugar. Mix in the dry sherry, chili oil, soy sauce, and sesame oil.
  • Place about one teaspoon of the mixture in the center of each won ton wrapper. Bring points of the wrapper together (in a triangular shape) and pinch the edges, sealing them closed with egg whites.
  • Meanwhile, bring a large pot of water to boil. Carefully place won tons into boiling water without crowding. (Work in batches if necessary.) When the wontons float to the surface, add a cup of cold water and allow the water to come to a boil again. Then remove from the boiling water.

CHINESE WONTONS

These appetizers disappear quickly! They are also great dipped in a mixture of soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce.

Provided by Cocoa

Categories     Pork

Time 35m

Yield 50 appetizers

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 lb ground pork
3 chopped garlic cloves
1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger
1 tablespoon soy sauce
1 teaspoon sesame oil
3 carrots, finely diced
3 stalks celery, finely diced
6 green onions, finely diced
1 (12 ounce) package wonton wrappers
water
oil (for deep frying)
your favorite sweet and sour sauce

Steps:

  • Combine pork, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil, and vegetables in a bowl.
  • Separate wonton skins.
  • Place a heaping teaspoon of filling in the center of the wonton.
  • Brush water on 2 borders of the skin, covering 1/4 inch from the edge.
  • Fold skin over to form a triangle, sealing edges.
  • Pinch the two long outside points together.
  • Heat oil to 450 degrees and fry 4 to 5 at a time until golden.
  • Drain and serve with sauce.

Tips:

  • Prep your ingredients in advance: Chop, mince, and measure all your ingredients before you start cooking. This will help you stay organized and ensure that you have everything you need on hand.
  • Use fresh wonton wrappers: Fresh wonton wrappers are more pliable and easier to work with than dried wrappers. If you can't find fresh wrappers, you can use dried wrappers, but be sure to soak them in warm water for 10 minutes before using.
  • Don't overfill the wontons: Overfilling the wontons will make them difficult to seal and may cause them to burst during cooking. Aim to fill each wonton with about 1 tablespoon of filling.
  • Seal the wontons tightly: To prevent the wontons from opening during cooking, be sure to seal them tightly. You can do this by folding the wonton wrapper in half and pressing the edges together with your fingers.
  • Cook the wontons in batches: Don't overcrowd the pot when cooking the wontons. Cook them in batches so that they have enough room to circulate and cook evenly.
  • Serve the wontons immediately: Wontons are best served immediately after they are cooked. You can serve them with a dipping sauce, such as soy sauce, vinegar, or chili sauce.

Conclusion:

Wontons are a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed as an appetizer, main course, or snack. With a little practice, you can make wontons at home that are just as good as the ones you get from your favorite restaurant. So next time you're in the mood for something delicious and easy to make, give wontons a try!
