Categories     Side Dish     Vegetables     Onion

Time 18m

Yield 3

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 large onion, cut into 1/4-inch slices
1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1 cup milk, or as needed
¾ cup dry bread crumbs
seasoned salt to taste
1 quart oil for frying, or as needed

Steps:

  • Heat the oil in a deep-fryer to 365 degrees F (185 degrees C).
  • Separate the onion slices into rings, and set aside. In a small bowl, stir together the flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Dip the onion slices into the flour mixture until they are all coated; set aside. Whisk the egg and milk into the flour mixture using a fork. Dip the floured rings into the batter to coat, then place on a wire rack to drain until the batter stops dripping. The wire rack may be placed over a sheet of aluminum foil for easier clean up. Spread the bread crumbs out on a plate or shallow dish. Place rings one at a time into the crumbs, and scoop the crumbs up over the ring to coat. Give it a hard tap as you remove it from the crumbs. The coating should cling very well. Repeat with remaining rings.
  • Deep fry the rings a few at a time for 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove to paper towels to drain. Season with seasoning salt, and serve.

DAD'S ONION RINGS

Dad's Onion Rings image

When I was growing up, my dad enjoyed making these French fried onion rings. I'm not sure where the recipe came from, but it's been in Mom's recipe box for as long as I can remember. When I married 22 years ago, I copied some of Mom's recipes and this one was a must. Now I make this family favorite, and I'll expecially try to make it for Dad when he visits!

Tips:

  • Choose the right onions: Yellow or white onions are best for onion rings. They have a mild flavor and hold their shape well during frying.
  • Slice the onions evenly: This will help them cook evenly. Use a sharp knife and cut the onions about 1/4-inch thick.
  • Soak the onion rings in buttermilk: This will help them stay moist and tender during frying. You can also use milk or water, but buttermilk is the best option.
  • Coat the onion rings in a seasoned flour mixture: This will help them get crispy. Use a mixture of flour, salt, pepper, and paprika.
  • Fry the onion rings in hot oil: This will help them cook quickly and evenly. Heat the oil to 375 degrees Fahrenheit before adding the onion rings.
  • Drain the onion rings on paper towels: This will help remove excess oil.
  • Serve the onion rings hot with your favorite dipping sauce.

Conclusion:

Onion rings are a delicious and easy-to-make appetizer or side dish. They are perfect for parties, potlucks, or a casual meal at home. With a few simple tips, you can make onion rings that are crispy, tender, and flavorful. So next time you're looking for a tasty treat, give onion rings a try.
