MOM'S DYNAMITE SANDWICHES

Mom's Dynamite Sandwiches image

Whenever we had a family get-together and my mom had a lot of people to feed, she'd make her delicious dynamite sandwiches. I am from Woonsocket, Rhode Island, and this is a staple in this area. Dynamites are to Woonsocket what cheesesteaks are to Philadelphia. -Kathy Hewitt, Cranston, Rhode Island

DYNAMITE

Dynamite image

A Rhode Island exclusive. Kind of like a Sloppy Joe but far superior. Spicy enough to earn it's name, it's best washed down with a good beer. For you non Rhodey people, torpedo rolls are just the long sandwich rolls.

Time 4h30m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 pounds ground beef
2 green bell peppers, seeded and diced
1 (1/4 inch x 3 inch) strip red bell pepper, seeded and diced
1 medium yellow onion, chopped
1 medium red onion, chopped
2 (6 ounce) cans tomato paste
1 ½ cups water
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes, or to taste
8 torpedo rolls, split

Steps:

  • Place the ground beef in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the green pepper, red pepper, yellow onion and red onion to the skillet, and cook until meat is evenly browned and vegetables are tender. Drain excess grease from the pan.
  • Transfer the mixture to a slow cooker, and stir in tomato paste, water and red pepper flakes. Cover, and cook at the Low setting for at least 4 hours. I usually let it go for 12. The longer it simmers, the spicier it gets! Spoon into torpedo rolls and serve.

Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, 1 hour or until desired consistency and flavors are blended, stirring occasionally. Serve on buns. Yield: 16 servings.

Tips:

  • Use fresh, high-quality ingredients for the best flavor.
  • If you don't have a meat mallet, you can use a rolling pin or the bottom of a heavy saucepan to pound the chicken breasts thin.
  • Be sure to coat the chicken breasts in flour before frying them. This will help them to brown evenly and prevent them from sticking to the pan.
  • Don't overcrowd the pan when frying the chicken breasts. This will cause them to steam instead of fry and they won't be as crispy.
  • Let the chicken breasts rest for a few minutes before assembling the sandwiches. This will help the juices to redistribute throughout the meat.
  • Use your favorite sandwich bread or rolls. You can also use slider buns or Hawaiian rolls for a fun twist.
  • Get creative with your toppings! Some popular options include lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and cheese. You can also add bacon, avocado, or a fried egg for an extra-special sandwich.

Conclusion:

These dynamite sandwiches are sure to be a hit at your next party or potluck. They're easy to make, delicious, and can be customized to your liking. So what are you waiting for? Give them a try today!
