HARD SAUCE

I remember making this sauce for my mom when I was about 8 years old. I loved the aroma and spicy flavor. Today, many cooks spread cream-cheese frosting on spice cake instead, but I think you're really missing something if you bypass this warm, old-time sauce. -Shirley Joan Helfenbein, Lapeer, Michigan

MOM'S BEST SPAGHETTI SAUCE

Mom's Best Spaghetti Sauce image

A simple, slow cooked, authentic spaghetti sauce, as good as the restaurants serve...or better! The secret ingredient is baking soda, but do not taste the sauce right after adding it. Wait a while, and this sauce will not disappoint you. It is good right from the stove, but the flavors blend overnight. Best served with your favorite meatball recipe, where the meatballs cook in the sauce the last half hour. Be prepared to take a nap after eating.

HARD SAUCE FOR BREAD PUDDING OR CAKE

Hard Sauce for Bread Pudding or Cake image

This is a Great Depression recipe that's been in the family recipe files for an age. I remember my mom steaming leftover pound cake and serving this sauce hot on the side.

Provided by Aroostook

Categories     Dessert

Time 10m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons softened butter
2 tablespoons cornstarch
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons cold water (to dampened above ingredients.)
1 cup hot water
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon cider vinegar

Steps:

  • Mix sugar, butter, cornstarch, salt and cold water together in a small sauce pan.
  • Add hot water and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until thickened.
  • Add vinegar and vanilla.
  • Serve hot over warm bread pudding or warm pound cake.

Tips:

  • Use unsalted butter: This will help you control the amount of salt in the sauce.
  • Cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy: This will help incorporate air into the sauce, making it smooth and creamy.
  • Do not boil the sauce: Boiling will cause the sauce to curdle.
  • Keep the sauce warm until ready to serve: You can do this by placing it in a warm saucepan over very low heat or by setting it in a bowl over a pot of simmering water.
  • Serve the sauce immediately: Hard sauce will start to soften as it sits, so it is best to serve it as soon as possible.

Conclusion:

This classic hard sauce recipe is a delicious and easy way to add a touch of sweetness and richness to your favorite desserts. With just a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can make a delicious hard sauce that will be the perfect finishing touch for your next special occasion.
