This is a family favorite. I'm not a huge steak eater, but loved the flavor of stroganoff. Using hamburger made it more palatable for me and it was an easy dish for our children to eat as toddlers. -Terri Wetzel, Roseburg, Oregon

1 lb ground beef - extra lean works great
1/4 c onion - diced - more if you like
2 Tbsp flour
1 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp dried crushed basil
1/8 tsp garlic powder
1/8 tsp black pepper
1 can(s) condensed beef broth (10.5 oz)
1 can(s) tomato paste (6 oz)
1 can(s) sliced mushrooms (3 oz) drained
1 c sour cream
hot buttered wide noodles

Steps:

  • 1. Set noodles to cook while you prepare sauce. I usually prepare an entire package, but prepare what you think you will need.
  • 2. In large skillet, cook meat and onion until meat is lightly browned. Drain if needed.
  • 3. Combine flour, sugar, salt, basil, garlic powder and pepper. Sprinkle over meat. Stir in broth and tomato paste. Simmer uncovered 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • 4. Stir in mushrooms and sour cream. Heat through but do not boil.

Tips:

  • For a creamier sauce, use full-fat sour cream and cream cheese.

  • Add a teaspoon of Dijon mustard to the sauce for a little extra flavor.
  • If you want a vegetarian stroganoff, use tofu or tempeh instead of beef.
