Get ready to tantalize your taste buds with a delectable mock chicken fried steak, a plant-based twist on the classic Southern comfort food. This delightful dish is crafted using seitan, a meat alternative made from wheat gluten, which is marinated in a flavorful blend of herbs, spices, and vegan Worcestershire sauce. The seitan is then coated in a crispy breading and pan-fried until golden brown, resulting in a juicy and tender mock chicken that will satisfy even the most discerning palate. Accompanying this mock chicken fried steak are three delectable recipes: a creamy vegan mushroom gravy, a refreshing cucumber salad, and a fluffy mashed potato. The velvety gravy, made with sautéed mushrooms, plant-based milk, and a touch of Dijon mustard, adds a rich and savory dimension to the mock chicken. The crisp and refreshing cucumber salad, with its tangy dressing, provides a delightful contrast to the richness of the mock chicken and gravy. Finally, the fluffy mashed potatoes, whipped until smooth and creamy, offer a comforting and classic side dish to complete this delightful plant-based meal.

MOCK CHICKEN FRIED STEAK WITH MILK GRAVY

Mock Chicken Fried Steak With Milk Gravy image

My mother made these for us four girls. Money was tight and she couldn't afford steak very often. These use ground beef. I use a 80/20 lean to fat. You can use ground round but it tends to be a little too dry. This is great with mashed potatoes. Everyone I have ever made it for loved it. The first time my DH had it he never knew it was ground beef. He just commented on the tenderness of the steak!

I'm not sure where my mom got this recipe, but she used to make it at least once a month. Although she never served it with gravy, I think peppered gravy would go great with this.

  • Use a tender cut of steak. This will ensure that the steak is not tough or chewy. Some good options include flank steak, skirt steak, or top sirloin.
  • Marinate the steak for at least 30 minutes. This will help to tenderize the steak and add flavor. You can use a simple marinade made with olive oil, soy sauce, garlic, and pepper.
  • Cook the steak over medium heat. This will help to prevent the steak from becoming overcooked and tough.
  • Don't overcook the steak. The steak should be cooked to an internal temperature of 145 degrees Fahrenheit for medium-rare or 160 degrees Fahrenheit for medium.
  • Serve the steak immediately. This will help to ensure that the steak is hot and juicy.
