OATMEAL MOLASSES DROP COOKIES

I *love* these cookies! They are chewy, chunky, spicy, and delicious! The recipe originally came from Betty Crocker's Cooky Book and were listed as "The Best Cooky of 1900-1910". For a change, try substituting cut-up dates or other dried fruits for the raisins. NOTE: If you replace the shortening with butter as many reviewers have done, you will probably get a crispier vs. chewy cookie.

WWII OATMEAL MOLASSES COOKIES

WWII Oatmeal Molasses Cookies image

This was my Grandmother's recipe from the 1940's. These cookies use molasses in place of brown sugar, which was one of the items rationed during the war (and harder to get than white sugar, they tell me). To me they're better than regular oatmeal cookies!

2 teaspoons vanilla extract
½ cup chopped walnuts

Tips:

  • To ensure chewy cookies, do not overmix the dough. Once the ingredients are combined, mix just until a dough forms.
  • Use old-fashioned oats for the best texture. Quick-cooking oats will not provide the same chewy texture.
  • For a stronger bourbon flavor, use a higher-proof bourbon. A bourbon with a proof of 100 or higher will give the cookies a more pronounced bourbon flavor.
  • If you don't have any bourbon on hand, you can substitute rum or brandy. However, the flavor of the cookies will be slightly different.
  • Be careful not to overbake the cookies. They should be baked just until the edges are golden brown and the centers are set.
  • Allow the cookies to cool completely before serving. This will help them to firm up and develop their full flavor.

Conclusion:

Missy's Oatmeal Bourbon Cookies are a delicious and easy-to-make treat that is perfect for any occasion. With their chewy texture, rich bourbon flavor, and sweet oatmeal, these cookies are sure to be a hit with everyone who tries them.
