MOROCCAN MINT TEA

Moroccan Mint Tea image

You can barely take a step in the markets of Marrakech without tripping over fresh mint, or at least without being offered a glass of hot, sweet mint tea. Be sure to lift the teapot high above the cup while pouring; Moroccans appreciate the way this aerates the tea (and they always pour with great panache).

Yield Makes 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 tablespoon loose Chinese gunpowder green tea
5 cups boiling water
3 to 4 tablespoons sugar, or to taste
1 large bunch fresh mint (1 ounce)
Special Equipment
a 1- to 1 1/2-quart teapot

Steps:

  • Put tea in teapot and pour in 1 cup boiling water, then swirl gently to warm pot and rinse tea. Strain out and discard water, reserving tea leaves in pot.
  • Add remaining 4 cups boiling water to tea and let steep 2 minutes. Stir in sugar (to taste) and mint sprigs and steep 3 to 4 minutes more. Serve in small heatproof glasses.

Tips:

  • Choose fresh herbs: Fresh mint and tarragon leaves offer the best flavor for your tea. If using dried herbs, use half the amount, as they tend to be more concentrated.
  • Steep for the right amount of time: Steeping the tea for too long can result in a bitter taste. Aim for 5-7 minutes for fresh herbs and 3-5 minutes for dried herbs.
  • Adjust the sweetness to your preference: If you prefer a sweeter tea, add honey, sugar, or a natural sweetener like stevia to taste. You can also add a squeeze of lemon or lime juice for a refreshing twist.
  • Enjoy hot or cold: Mint tarragon tea can be enjoyed both hot and cold. For a refreshing iced tea, simply brew a pot of tea and let it cool completely before pouring it over ice.
  • Experiment with different variations: Feel free to experiment with different variations of this tea. Try adding other herbs like chamomile or lemongrass, or infuse the tea with fruits like berries or citrus slices for a unique flavor profile.

Conclusion:

With its refreshing taste and potential health benefits, mint tarragon tea is a delightful and versatile beverage. Whether you're looking for a soothing drink to relax with or a caffeine-free way to boost your well-being, this tea is a great choice. So, gather your ingredients, brew a pot, and savor the goodness of this naturally flavorful herbal tea.
