MINI MINCE PIES

Mini Mince Pies image

Mince Pies are a Christmas staple in the UK. These sweet and boozy mini fruit pies are the perfect recipe to add to your Holiday cookie platter! Yield: 24 mini pies

Provided by Sarah | Curious Cuisiniere

Categories     Dessert

Time 1h30m

Number Of Ingredients 5

2 c unbleached all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
11 Tbsp cool unsalted butter, (cubed)
6-7 Tbsp cold water
2 c mincemeat

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl mix the flour and salt.
  • Cut butter into the flour mixture with a fork or pastry blender until the flour has the consistency of sand and the butter is evenly distributed.
  • Add 6-7 Tbsp of water slowly and mix with fork until the dough clumps together around the fork. It should clean the edges of the bowl and nearly come together on its own. All it should need is a gentle press together to come into a clean ball.
  • Roll out the crust on a lightly floured surface to roughly 1/8 inch thick.
  • Preheat your oven to 350F.
  • Cut the rolled crust into small circles that fit nicely into your mini muffin tin. (We used roughly 2 ¼ - 2 ½ inch circles.) Re-roll the crust dough as necessary to fill 24 mini muffin tins.
  • Spoon roughly 1 Tbsp of mincemeat into each crust shell.
  • Roll out the leftover crust and use a cookie cutter to cut out a star or other shape for the top crust.
  • Bake the mini mince pies for 30-35 minutes, until golden.
  • Remove the pies from the oven and let them cool for 10 minutes in the pan before removing them to cool completely on a wire rack.
  • Store the mini mince pies in an air-tight container for up to 2 weeks on the counter.

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 190C/170C fan/gas 5. In a food processor, whizz together the flour, icing sugar and butter until they form fine crumbs (or rub in with your fingers). MINCE PIES

Learn to make British mince pies, which are basically rich tarts filled with dried fruits and spices soaked in alcohol, a Christmas specialty.

Provided by Regula Ysewijn

Number Of Ingredients 25

1¼ cup (175g) currants
1¼ cup (175g) large dark raisins
6 oz (175g) stewing apple, in small pieces
⅓ cup (50 g) candied orange peel
2 oz (50 g) prunes, pitted and chopped
½ cup (115g) butter, frozen and grated
½ cup (115g) soft brown sugar
½ tsp. ground cinnamon
½ tsp. ground mace
½ tsp. ground cloves
¼ tsp. ground nutmeg
¼ tsp. ground ginger
Pinch of sea salt
½ lemon or Seville orange, zest, and juice
1 cup brandy or rum (or half sherry, half rum) or as needed
1½ cups (180g) all-purpose flour
2 Tbsp. (20g) confectioners' sugar
Pinch of sea salt
7 Tbsp. (100g) chilled butter, diced
1 Tbsp. cold water
1 egg yolk
Butter, for greasing
Flour, for dusting
1 egg yolk
1 Tbsp. milk

Steps:

  • Put all the ingredients for the mincemeat in a bowl and add brandy or rum to cover the fruit. Stir well, then let it rest overnight. The next day, stir again and then divide among sterilized preserving jars.
  • To make the pastry, mix the flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl. Rub the butter into the mixture until it is the consistency of fine breadcrumbs. Add the water and egg yolk and knead until the mixture comes together into a smooth dough. Alternatively, use a food processor to make the pastry. Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and let it rest for 30 minutes in the refrigerator.
  • Preheat your oven to 350° F. Grease the tart molds with butter and cover the base of each with a small circle of parchment paper. Dust with flour.
  • Briefly knead the pastry until smooth, then pat it into a rectangle and roll it out to a thickness of ⅛ inch. Use a round cutter with a diameter of 2¾ - 3¼ inches to cut out pastry circles. Gently push the pastry rounds into the tart molds. Prick the base or each tart shell three times with a fork.
  • Knead the remaining dough back together and roll it out to cut out the lids-you can choose whichever shape you like, but stars are the most traditional.
  • Divide the 8 ounces of filling among the tarts and press down gently. Place the lids on top and brush with the egg wash.
  • Bake in the middle of the oven for 20-25 minutes until golden brown. Serve warm or cold.

Tips:

  • For a gluten-free version of the pies, use gluten-free flour and pastry.
  • If you don't have time to make your own mincemeat, you can use store-bought mincemeat. Just make sure it's a good quality mincemeat that you enjoy the taste of.
  • You can also add other ingredients to your mincemeat, such as chopped nuts, dried fruit, or spices, to taste.
  • Be careful not to overfill the pastry cases, or the pies will be difficult to seal and may burst during baking.
  • To make sure the pies are cooked through, insert a toothpick into the center of one of the pies. If the toothpick comes out clean, the pies are done.
  • Serve the pies warm with a dollop of whipped cream or custard, or simply enjoy them on their own.

Conclusion:

These mini orange mince pies are the perfect holiday treat. They're easy to make, delicious, and sure to be a hit with everyone who tries them. With their flaky pastry crust, tangy orange filling, and sweet mincemeat filling, these pies are the perfect way to celebrate the holiday season. So grab a cup of your favorite holiday drink and enjoy a delicious mini orange mince pie today!
