Simple hot dogs prepared Michigan style. I like to serve these with dill pickle-flavored potato chips for extra tang but French fries work good too.

Provided by Soup Loving Nicole

Time 30m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 11

8 frankfurter (5 in long x 3/4 in dia, 10 per pound)s hot dogs
1 pound lean ground beef
1 medium onion, diced, divided
½ cup water
¼ cup ketchup
2 tablespoons tomato paste
2 tablespoons distilled white vinegar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons chili powder
1 (11 ounce) package hot dog buns
2 tablespoons prepared yellow mustard, or to taste

Steps:

  • Place hot dogs in a large stockpot. Cover with water and bring to a boil. Turn heat off, cover, and let sit.
  • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat, add ground beef and half of the diced onions. Cook and stir until beef is no longer pink; making sure to break into fine pieces, about 8 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, whisk water, ketchup, tomato paste, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and chili powder until smooth.
  • Drain ground beef mixture and return to the skillet. Stir in reserved ketchup mixture, reduce heat, and simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Place hot dogs in buns. Top hot dogs with beef mixture. Divide remaining onions on top of the beef mixture and garnish with mustard.

Tips:

  • Choose the right hot dog: A good Michigan hot dog is made with a natural casing hot dog, which will give it a better snap and flavor. Look for hot dogs that are made with 100% beef and have a good fat content, around 30%.
  • Cook the hot dogs properly: Michigan hot dogs are typically grilled or fried. If you're grilling, cook the hot dogs over medium heat for about 5 minutes per side, or until they are heated through and have nice grill marks. If you're frying, heat the oil to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and cook the hot dogs for about 2 minutes per side, or until they are golden brown and crispy.
  • Use the right toppings: The classic Michigan hot dog is topped with yellow mustard, chopped white onions, and a Coney Island sauce. However, you can also get creative with your toppings. Some popular variations include adding sauerkraut, relish, pickles, diced tomatoes, and cheese.
  • Serve the hot dogs on a bun: Michigan hot dogs are typically served on a steamed bun. The bun should be soft and fluffy, and it should be able to hold all of the toppings without getting soggy.

Conclusion:

Michigan hot dogs are a delicious and unique regional food that is enjoyed by people of all ages. They are a great option for a quick and easy meal, and they can also be dressed up for a more special occasion. So next time you're looking for something to eat, give a Michigan hot dog a try. You won't be disappointed.
