Time 45m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 cup heavy cream (see Cook's note)
4 cinnamon sticks
8 ounces finely chopped semisweet chocolate
Cubed pound cake
Mini-bananas
Fresh or dried orange slices
Fresh or dried pears
Almond cookies
Coconut strips
Strawberries

Steps:

  • In small saucepan over medium heat, bring the cream and cinnamon sticks just to boil. Remove from the heat and set aside to steep for 15 minutes. Remove the cinnamon and discard.
  • Put the chocolate in a medium bowl. Bring the cream to a simmer, pour it over the chocolate, and let stand for 5 minutes. Stir the chocolate mixture until completely melted and smooth. Transfer the chocolate mixture to a fondue pot, and keep warm over a low sterno flame or in a large ramekin wrapped with a cloth napkin to keep it warm. Serve with a selection of the dippers.
  • Cook's note: This makes a thick fondue, for a thinner sauce, simply add more cream.

Tips:

  • Use Fresh and High-Quality Ingredients: The quality of your ingredients will greatly impact the taste of your fondue. Choose fresh vegetables, ripe fruits, and high-quality cheese.
  • Choose the Right Cheese: The type of cheese you use will determine the flavor and texture of your fondue. For a classic Mexican fondue, use a blend of Oaxaca and Chihuahua cheese, or a queso Oaxaca or queso Chihuahua individually. These cheeses melt well and have a mild, creamy flavor that pairs well with the other ingredients.
  • Use a Variety of Dippers: Offer a variety of dippers to accompany your fondue. This could include tortilla chips, bread cubes, grilled vegetables, or fruit slices. You can also include cooked meats, such as chorizo or chicken, or seafood, such as shrimp or fish.
  • Keep the Fondue Warm: Fondue is best served warm and melted. Use a fondue pot or slow cooker to keep the fondue warm throughout the meal. If you are using a fondue pot, be sure to use a tealight or fondue burner to keep the cheese melted.
  • Experiment with Different Flavors: There are many different ways to flavor your Mexican fondue. You can add spices, herbs, and other ingredients to create a unique and flavorful dish. Some popular additions include chili peppers, cumin, cilantro, garlic, and onions.

Conclusion:

Mexican fondue is a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It is a great way to share a meal with friends and family, and it is perfect for parties and special occasions. With a little planning and preparation, you can easily make Mexican fondue at home.
