Categories     Sauces

Time 30m

Yield 1 cup

Number Of Ingredients 19

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 clove garlic, minced
1 teaspoon minced fresh ginger
2 cups wild blueberries, lightly mashed
1/2 cup cider vinegar
1/2 cup honey
1 tablespoon molasses
1 tablespoon ketchup
1 teaspoon paprika
coarse salt
freshly cracked black pepper, to taste
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon celery seed
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, to taste
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
2 tablespoons brown sugar

Steps:

  • Heat the vegetable oil in a small saucepan over medium-high heat.
  • Saute the onion, garlic and ginger until soft, about 3 minutes.
  • Stir in the blueberries and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
  • Add the cider vinegar, honey, molasses, ketchup, paprika, salt, pepper, cinnamon, Dijon mustard, nutmeg, celery seed, cayenne pepper, cloves and brown sugar.
  • Bring to a boil.
  • Reduce heat to low and simmer the sauce for 15 minutes.
  • Puree the mixture with an immersion blender.
  • If you want a"finer" sauce, strain it back into a clean saucepan.
  • Bring the sauce back to a simmer and cook a few minutes more.
  • Let cool completely.

Tips:

  • Use fresh blueberries: Fresh blueberries will give your sauce the best flavor. If you can't find fresh blueberries, you can use frozen blueberries, but be sure to thaw them before using.
  • Don't overcook the blueberries: Overcooked blueberries will lose their flavor and become mushy. Cook them just until they begin to burst.
  • Use a good quality barbecue sauce: The barbecue sauce you use will make a big difference in the flavor of your blueberry barbecue sauce. Choose a sauce that you like the taste of and that has a good balance of sweet, sour, and smoky flavors.
  • Add a little bit of heat: A little bit of heat can help to balance out the sweetness of the blueberries. You can add heat by using a spicy barbecue sauce, or by adding a pinch of cayenne pepper or chili powder to the sauce.
  • Serve the sauce with your favorite foods: Blueberry barbecue sauce is great on chicken, pork, fish, and vegetables. You can also use it as a dipping sauce for appetizers.

Conclusion:

Blueberry barbecue sauce is a delicious and versatile sauce that can be used on a variety of foods. It's easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. So next time you're looking for a new barbecue sauce to try, give blueberry barbecue sauce a try. You won't be disappointed!
