PIZZA SAUCE

Yield Makes enough for 2 pizzas

Number Of Ingredients 5

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 can whole Italian peeled plum tomatoes (2 pounds)
3/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Pour olive oil into a large skillet, and place over medium heat. Using your hands, squeeze tomatoes to crush them. Add to the warm olive oil, along with the remaining ingredients. Cook over medium-low heat, breaking up tomatoes with a wooden spoon, until the sauce is thick, 40 to 50 minutes.
  • Pass sauce through a food mill, discard the seeds, and let cool.

Tips:

  • Use good quality tomatoes. Fresh, ripe tomatoes are the best choice for a flavorful sauce, but canned tomatoes can also be used. If using canned tomatoes, choose a brand that uses whole tomatoes and no added salt or sugar.
  • Roast your tomatoes. Roasting tomatoes brings out their natural sweetness and flavor. To roast tomatoes, toss them with olive oil and salt, and roast them in a preheated oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 30-40 minutes, or until they are softened and slightly browned.
  • Use a variety of herbs and spices. Oregano, basil, thyme, rosemary, garlic, and red pepper flakes are all common herbs and spices used in pizza sauce. Feel free to experiment with different combinations to create a sauce that you love.
  • Don't overcook the sauce. Pizza sauce should be simmered gently for 30-40 minutes, or until it has thickened slightly. Overcooking the sauce can make it bitter.
  • Use the sauce immediately or store it for later use. Pizza sauce can be used immediately on your favorite pizza or stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

Conclusion:

With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can easily make a delicious pizza sauce at home. Whether you are using fresh or canned tomatoes, roasted or unroasted, there are endless possibilities when it comes to creating a pizza sauce that you and your family will love. So get creative and experiment with different flavors and ingredients to find the perfect pizza sauce recipe for you.
