Nonstick vegetable oil spray
1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
2 large eggs
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley (preferably Italian)
1/4 cup crushed cornflakes
3 large garlic cloves, minced
2 1/2 teaspoons dried oregano
1/2 teaspoons ground white pepper
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 cups purchased marinara sauce
6 long Italian or French rolls, split lengthwise, toasted

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Spray heavy large baking sheet with nonstick vegetable oil spray. Combine ground beef, grated Parmesan cheese, eggs, chopped fresh parsley, crushed cornflakes, minced garlic, dried oregano, ground white pepper and salt in large bowl and blend thoroughly. Using moistened hands, shape meat mixture into 1 1/2-inch rounds and place on prepared sheet, spacing evenly. Bake meatballs until just firm to touch and cooked through, about 20 minutes
  • Bring marinara sauce to simmer in heavy large saucepan. Add meatballs to sauce and simmer until sauce thickens slightly, about 15 minutes. (Can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate. Rewarm over low heat before continuing.)
  • Gently press center of bottoms of rolls to compact slightly. Spoon 5 or 6 meatballs into depression in each roll. Spoon enough sauce over to coat. Place tops of rolls over and serve.

Time 10h10m

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 lb lean ground beef
1 egg
1/2 c italian seasoned bread crumbs
1 jar(s) chunky pasta sauce
4 italian rolls (about 6 inches long each) halved lengthwise
2-4 c mozzarella cheese (depending on your preferred amount of cheese)

Steps:

  • 1. Combine ground beef, egg and bread crumbs in a medium bowl. Shape mixture into 12 meatballs.
  • 2. Arrange meatballs in a slow cooker. Pour pasta sauce over meatballs.
  • 3. Cook on LOW for 8-10 hours or on HIGH for 4-6 hours or until meatballs are done. Serve meatballs and sauce in rolls, topped with cheese.
  • 4. NOTE: If desired, toast sandwich in broiler until cheese is melted and golden brown.

Tips:

  • Use a combination of ground meats for the meatballs. This will give them a more complex flavor and texture. I like to use a mixture of ground beef, ground pork, and ground veal, but you can use any combination of meats that you like.
  • Season the meatballs generously. Don't be afraid to add plenty of salt, pepper, and garlic powder. You can also add other herbs and spices to taste, such as oregano, basil, or thyme.
  • Cook the meatballs thoroughly. Make sure that they are cooked all the way through before you add them to the sandwiches. You can cook them in a skillet, in the oven, or in a slow cooker.
  • Use a good quality bread for the sandwiches. A sturdy bread that can hold up to the weight of the meatballs is best. I like to use a crusty Italian bread, but you can use any type of bread that you like.
  • Load up the sandwiches with toppings. The more toppings, the better! Some classic toppings include marinara sauce, melted cheese, onions, and peppers. You can also get creative and add your own favorite toppings.
