2 tablespoons olive oil

  • Reserve a heaping tablespoon of the caramelized onions for a garnish.
  • In a food processor, pulse remaining onions, sour cream, buttermilk, and salt just until combined.

SLOW-COOKER CARAMELIZED ONION DIP

Slow-Cooker Caramelized Onion Dip image

With sweet, melty onions mixed into a creamy base and brought to life with a couple of savory ingredients, this luscious dip will keep everyone hovering around the bowl and, in between bites, talking to each other about how good it is! And since that's what parties are all about, we think this is the recipe you need next time you entertain. The inspiration behind this recipe was the crowd-favorite onion dip that you buy in a tub at the grocery store, but our goal wasn't simply to replicate. While we wanted to hit the same savory and rich notes of the original dip, we also wanted to create something new that would be worth the effort to make from scratch, without demanding too much effort. This wasn't too big a challenge for the Betty Crocker Test Kitchen experts, who came up with the idea of caramelizing onions in a slow cooker, so all you really have to do is chop the onions and forget about them for the rest of the day. With such a flavorful base, it doesn't take much to round out the recipe: cream cheese, a little mayo, fresh herbs, a dash of soy sauce-that's really all there is to it. Next time you have people coming around, give this recipe a try.

CARAMELIZED SWEET ONION DIP

Caramelized Sweet Onion Dip image

From Cooking Light 11/08....."Caramelizing enhances the onion's inherent sweetness. If you can't find sweet onions, substitute two large Spanish onions and add a tablespoon of sugar. This dip is best served warm. If time is tight, you can caramelize the onions (step 2) earlier in the day; combine with the other ingredients and bake just before guests arrive. Serve with a crunchy dipper like melba toast."

Time 40m

Yield 10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 tablespoon butter, divided
3 cups sweet onions, diced (about 2 large onions)
1/4 teaspoon kosher salt, divided
1/2 teaspoon garlic, minced
1 cup low-fat mayonnaise
1/2 cup light sour cream
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
cooking spray
1/3 cup whole wheat panko (Japanese breadcrumbs)
1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°.
  • Melt 1 1/2 teaspoons butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and 1/8 teaspoon salt to pan; cook 15 minutes or until tender, stirring occasionally. Add garlic; cook 10 minutes or until onion is golden brown and very tender, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat; cool 5 minutes.
  • Combine the remaining 1/8 teaspoon salt, mayonnaise, and next 4 ingredients (through Worcestershire sauce) in a medium bowl, stirring until smooth. Stir in onion mixture. Transfer mixture to a 1-quart baking dish coated with cooking spray.
  • Melt remaining 1 1/2 teaspoons butter. Combine melted butter and panko. Sprinkle panko mixture evenly over onion mixture. Bake at 350° for 15 minutes or until thoroughly heated and bubbly. Sprinkle with parsley. Serve hot.

Tips:

  • Use high-quality ingredients: Fresh, flavorful ingredients will result in a better-tasting dip. Choose sweet onions that are firm and have no bruises or blemishes. Use a good quality mayonnaise and sour cream.
  • caramelize the onions slowly and patiently: This is the key step in making this dip. Take your time and cook the onions over low heat until they are golden brown and caramelized. This will bring out their natural sweetness and flavor.
  • Season the dip to taste: Once the onions are caramelized, season the dip with salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste. You can also add a bit of cayenne pepper for a little heat.
  • Chill the dip before serving: This will allow the flavors to meld and develop. You can make the dip ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • Serve the dip with a variety of dippers: Tortilla chips, crackers, vegetables, and bread are all great options. You can also use the dip as a sandwich spread.

Conclusion:

Maui Caramelized Sweet Onion Dip is a delicious and versatile dip that is perfect for any occasion. It is easy to make and can be tailored to your own taste preferences. Whether you are serving it at a party or enjoying it as a snack at home, this dip is sure to be a hit.
