My grandmother has made this recipe for years, and now that she can no longer do this herself, I have taken over the family tradition of preparing this great dessert. I hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 ½ cups quick-cooking oats
1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 ¼ cups brown sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
¾ cup butter
½ pound dates, pitted and chopped
¾ cup water
1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Stir oats, flour, brown sugar, baking soda, and baking powder together in a bowl; cut in butter using a pastry blender until mixture is mealy and butter pieces are uniformly small.
  • Press half of oat mixture evenly into the bottom of a 9x13-inch baking pan.
  • Cook dates with water in a small saucepan over medium heat until they fall apart and are easily mashed with a wooden spoon, about 10 minutes; remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
  • Spoon date mixture evenly over oat mixture in baking pan; sprinkle remaining oat mixture evenly over top and press into place.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until crust is golden at the edges, about 30 minutes; remove to cool completely on a wire rack. Cut into bars.

3/4 cup raspberry jam or 3/4 cup strawberry jam

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 325°F.
  • Stir together flour, sugar and rolled oats.
  • Mix in butter until mixture is crumbly.
  • Press half of it into an 8x8x2-inch square pan.
  • Spread with jam.
  • Put remaining crumbly mixture over jam, covering it completely, and press down lightly.
  • Bake 40-45 minutes until golden.
  • Cut into squares.

1 1/2 c all purpose flour
1 c brown sugar,lightly packed
1 1/2 c rolled oats,uncooked
3/4 c butter, room temperature not too soft though
3/4 c jam-raspberry or plum or cooked dates

Steps:

  • 1. Mix together flour,sugar and rolled oats. Work in butter until mixture is crumbly. Press 1/2 of the mixture evenly in an 8-inch square pan. Spread with jam to within 1/4-inch of edges. Press remaining mixture over jam, covering it completely. Bake in 325^ for 40-45 minutes, until golden brown. Cool and cut in squares.

2 cups oatmeal
2 cups flour
1 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup butter
1/2 lb dates, pitted
2/3 cup water
1/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon lemon juice

Steps:

  • Base:.
  • In a large bowl, combine oatmeal, flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
  • Cut in butter until crumbly.
  • Spread 3/4 of the crumbs in a 9 x 13 inch cake pan.
  • Date Filling:.
  • Mix dates, water and sugar together in a saucepan.
  • Cook until thick, stirring frequently.
  • Remove from heat and add lemon juice.
  • Allow to cool before using.
  • Spread over the crumbs in the pan.
  • Sprinkle the remaining crumbs over top of the filling.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F.
