CHEDDAR MASHED POTATO BAKE

CHEDDAR MASHED POTATO BAKE image

Categories     Potato     Side     Quick & Easy

Yield 8 people

Number Of Ingredients 9

3 lb Yukon Gold Potatoes
8 oz Mild Cheddar Cheese
1-2 Garlic Cloves--Minced
1/4 Cup Butter (absolutely NO margarine)
1 Cup Milk (add more if necessary while mixing)
3-5 Pieces Cooked Bacon--chopped into small pieces
2 TBSP Fresh Chopped Chives
2 tbsp Kosher Salt
3 tbsp Fresh Ground Pepper

Steps:

  • Place potatoes in large saucepan and cover with cold water. Cook over medium heat until potatoes become tender and very easy to pierce with a fork. Drain the water. Mash potatoes until smooth, or, you can leave a little bit of "chunk" to them, which is what I do. Stir in milk, butter, kosher salt, pepper and minced garlic. Add more milk if necessary. Take the mashed potato mixture and spread out evenly in a pan and set oven to 350. Add the cheddar cheese to the top along with the chopped bacon and chopped chives. Bake until cheese is melted over the top, appx. 10-15 minutes. Be sure to check frequently while baking. Serve with any meal or just as a snack. Sour Cream can also be added on the top if desired.

Tips:

  • Choose the right potatoes: Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes are best for mashed potatoes as they are fluffy and creamy when cooked.
  • Cook the potatoes properly: Boil the potatoes in salted water until they are tender but not mushy. Drain the potatoes well and let them steam dry for a few minutes before mashing.
  • Use a potato ricer: A potato ricer is the best tool for getting smooth and lump-free mashed potatoes. If you don't have a potato ricer, you can use a food mill or a potato masher.
  • Add butter and milk: Butter and milk are essential for making creamy and flavorful mashed potatoes. Add them to the potatoes while they are still hot and stir until they are well combined.
  • Season the potatoes: Salt and pepper are the basic seasonings for mashed potatoes. You can also add other herbs and spices, such as garlic powder, onion powder, or chives.
  • Top the mashed potatoes with cheese: A layer of melted cheese on top of the mashed potatoes is a classic and delicious addition. You can use any type of cheese you like, such as cheddar, Parmesan, or mozzarella.
  • Bake the mashed potatoes: Baking the mashed potatoes gives them a crispy top and a creamy interior. Bake the mashed potatoes in a preheated oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.

Conclusion:

Mashed potato bake is a comforting and delicious dish that is perfect for any occasion. It is easy to make and can be customized with a variety of ingredients. Whether you like your mashed potatoes simple or loaded with cheese and bacon, there is a recipe out there that will suit your taste. So next time you are looking for a hearty and satisfying meal, give mashed potato bake a try.
