Time 20m

Yield about 1 cup marzipan

Number Of Ingredients 4

8 ounces almond paste
1 3/4 cups confectioners' sugar
4 tablespoons corn syrup
Food coloring

Steps:

  • In the bowl of an electric mixer, add the almond paste and beat just to break up the almond paste some. Add about 1 cup of the sugar and mix until it is incorporated. Add the remaining sugar and beat until incorporated. The mixture will look like coarse bread crumbs at this point. Add the corn syrup and mix to combine well. The mixture will still be very crumbly.
  • Turn the mixture out onto a clean work surface and knead until it makes a smooth dough. If the dough seems too sticky, knead in a little more confectioners' sugar. The dough can be tightly wrapped and refrigerated at this point. If you want to color the marzipan, break off the amount of dough you want colored. Add a drop and knead in. For more intense color, add more food coloring. Shape into desired shapes.

Tips:

  • Choosing the Right Marzipan: Opt for high-quality marzipan with a smooth texture and a balanced almond-to-sugar ratio.
  • Chilling the Marzipan: Before working with marzipan, chill it in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. This firms up the marzipan, making it easier to shape and handle.
  • Using Gloves: Wearing gloves while working with marzipan helps prevent the natural oils from your hands from transferring to the marzipan, which can affect its texture and appearance.
  • Shaping the Bees: To achieve a realistic bee shape, start by rolling the marzipan into small, oval balls for the bodies. Then, shape the heads, wings, and stingers separately and attach them to the bodies using a little water or edible glue.
  • Adding Details: Use edible markers or food coloring to add details such as the eyes, stripes, and stingers to the bees. You can also use small pieces of black licorice for the antennae.
  • Storing the Bees: Store the finished marzipan bees in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. They can be kept for up to a week before consuming.

Conclusion:

With careful attention to detail and a bit of creativity, you can transform ordinary marzipan into delightful and realistic marzipan bees. These sweet treats are perfect for decorating cakes, cupcakes, and other desserts, adding a touch of whimsy and charm to any occasion. Whether you're a seasoned baker or a beginner, give these marzipan bees a try and impress your friends and family with your culinary skills.
