ALLSPICED APPLE BUTTER
Steps:
- Place the apples in a large, heavy-bottomed pot over low heat. Cook, uncovered, for 1 1/2 hours, stirring occasionally. Add the brown sugar and spices; continue cooking over low heat, stirring occasionally, until very thick, about 30 minutes more. To test for doneness, place a spoonful of the mixture on a white plate and let sit for 20 seconds. If a ring of liquid forms around the apples, there is still too much liquid in the mixture. Continue cooking and testing until no ring forms.
Tips:
- To make the apple butter with less sugar, use a variety of apples that are naturally sweet, such as Fuji, Honeycrisp, or Pink Lady.
- You can also reduce the amount of sugar by using a sugar substitute, such as stevia or erythritol.
- If you want a spicier apple butter, add more red pepper flakes or cayenne pepper to taste.
- Be sure to cook the apple butter until it has reached a thick, spreadable consistency. This may take several hours, but it is worth it for the delicious results.
- Apple butter can be stored in a sealed jar in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, or in the freezer for up to 6 months.
Conclusion:
This lower-sugar spicy all-day apple butter is a delicious and versatile condiment that can be enjoyed on toast, pancakes, waffles, or even ice cream. It is also a great way to use up leftover apples. With its reduced sugar content and the addition of spicy pepper flakes, this apple butter is a healthier and more flavorful alternative to traditional apple butter.
