LYNCHBURG BARBECUE SAUCE (LOW SODIUM)

Lynchburg Barbecue Sauce (Low Sodium) image

A very low sodium barbecue sauce that's not too sweet (which I prefer) from Dick Logue's newsletter of low sodium recipes, which I subscribe to. If you add it too early and it cooks longer than about 1/2 hour it blackens and gets crisp.

Time 2m

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 7

1/2 cup Jack Daniels Whiskey
1/2 cup reduced sodium ketchup
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons vinegar
1/2 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard

Steps:

  • Mix ingredients together.
  • Brush on meat while cooking during the last 1/2 hour of grilling.

Tips:

  • Use low-sodium ingredients: This is the key to making a low-sodium barbecue sauce. Look for low-sodium versions of soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and ketchup. You can also use unsalted tomato sauce or diced tomatoes.
  • Add sweetness with natural ingredients: Instead of using refined sugar, use natural sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, or molasses. These sweeteners will add a rich, complex flavor to your sauce without adding a lot of sodium.
  • Use spices and herbs to add flavor: Spices and herbs are a great way to add flavor to your sauce without adding sodium. Some good options include garlic powder, onion powder, chili powder, smoked paprika, cumin, and oregano.
  • Let the sauce simmer: Simmering the sauce allows the flavors to meld and develop. It also helps to thicken the sauce and reduce the sodium content.
  • Taste the sauce as you go: It's important to taste the sauce as you're making it so that you can adjust the seasonings to your liking. Add more spices, herbs, or sweetener as needed.

Conclusion:

Making your own low-sodium barbecue sauce is a great way to control the sodium content of your food. With a few simple ingredients and a little bit of time, you can make a delicious and healthy barbecue sauce that the whole family will love. So next time you're having a barbecue, try making your own low-sodium barbecue sauce. You won't be disappointed!
