SPICY BAKED SALMON RECIPE WITH LIME AND HARISSA

Spicy Baked Salmon Recipe with Lime and Harissa image

Spicy salmon with harissa sauce is all you need for a light, flavor-packed dinner! Ready in just 15 minutes or so, it's the perfect fish dinner for busy weeknights. I recommend using a center-cut salmon fillet to ensure the entire piece of fish cooks at the same speed. For the sauce, homemade harissa or a quality store-bought one will work. Serve this harissa lime baked salmon with a side of bright veggies like sautéed asparagus or crispy lemon broccoli and grains of your choice.

Number Of Ingredients 12

1 ½ pounds salmon fillet
Kosher salt
Extra virgin olive oil,
2 to 4 tablespoons harissa paste, (homemade or store-bought)
1 to 2 tablespoons honey
Juice of 2 large limes, (plus optional lime wedges to serve)
3 to 4 large garlic cloves, (minced)
1 teaspoon Aleppo pepper
1 teaspoon coriander
½ teaspoon cumin
½ teaspoon ground ginger
Kosher salt

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
  • Make the sauce. In a mixing bowl, add ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil with the harissa paste, honey, lime juice, garlic, spices, and a pinch of kosher salt. Whisk to combine. Set the sauce aside for now.
  • Pat the salmon dry and season on both sides with kosher salt, then place it in a lightly oiled 9" x 13" baking pan. If you like, you can pour a little harissa sauce into the center of the baking pan, and then place the salmon on top.
  • Spoon the sauce all over the salmon and spread it well.
  • Cover the baking pan with aluminum foil and place it on the center rack of the heated oven.
  • Bake for 10 to 15 minutes until salmon is almost completely cooked through at the thickest part (cooking time will vary based on the thickness of your fish. If your salmon is thinner, check several minutes early to ensure your salmon does not overcook. If your piece is very thick, 1 ½ or more inches, it may take a bit longer.)
  • Carefully remove from oven and open foil to uncover the top of the salmon. Place it under the broiler briefly, about 3 minutes or so. Watch closely as it broils to make sure it doesn't over-cook and the garlic does not burn.)
  • Remove from the oven and serve with lime wedges to the side.

FISH SKEWERS WITH HERBS AND LIME

Fish Skewers With Herbs and Lime image

In this simple, speedy recipe, meaty cubes of fish are marinated with fish sauce and red-pepper flakes, then lined up on skewers and grilled until seared at their corners, but still juicy and tender inside. Topped with herbs and lime juice, it's a minimalist take that lets the flavors of good, fresh fish shine through. If you have a fish basket and would rather line up the cubes inside that, go right ahead. Just watch it carefully and adjust the cooking time if needed. If you're looking to add a sauce, this is lovely served with some garlic-spiked yogurt on the side.

Time 20m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 garlic cloves, finely grated, pressed or minced
1 tablespoon fish sauce
1/4 teaspoon red-pepper flakes
3 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
1 pound thick, dense fish steaks, such as tuna or swordfish, cut into 1 1/2-inch pieces
Lime wedges, for serving
2 scallions, white and green parts, trimmed and thinly sliced
1/3 cup chopped dill, mint, parsley, cilantro or a combination

Steps:

  • Heat the grill to high. In a mixing bowl, combine garlic, fish sauce and red-pepper flakes. Whisk in oil. Add fish cubes and gently toss to evenly coat. Let marinate while the grill heats up.
  • Thread marinated fish onto metal or pre-soaked bamboo skewers (see Tip), pushing them up so they touch. This keeps them from overcooking.
  • When the grill is hot, lightly brush the grates with oil and add the skewers. Cook until slightly charred in places, about 2 to 4 minutes, rotating them carefully halfway through.
  • Transfer to a serving platter, and immediately squeeze 2 or 3 lime wedges on top of the fish while still hot. Garnish fish with scallions and herbs, and serve with more lime wedges on the side.

Tips:

  • Choose the Right Limes: Use fresh, ripe limes for the best flavor. Look for limes that are plump and have a deep green color.
  • Prepare the Fish Properly: Rinse the fish fillets under cold water and pat them dry with paper towels. This will help the marinade adhere to the fish and prevent the fish from sticking to the baking sheet.
  • Use a Glass or Ceramic Baking Dish: Avoid using a metal baking dish, as it can react with the lime juice and alter the flavor of the fish.
  • Marinate the Fish: Marinating the fish in the lime juice and herbs helps to infuse it with flavor and keep it moist during baking.
  • Bake the Fish at a High Temperature: Baking the fish at a high temperature helps to create a crispy exterior and a tender, flaky interior.
  • Serve the Fish Immediately: Baked lime fish is best served immediately, while it is still hot and flaky. You can garnish it with fresh herbs or lime wedges for an extra touch of flavor.

Conclusion:

Baked lime fish is a simple yet delicious dish that can be prepared with just a few ingredients. The combination of tangy lime juice, aromatic herbs, and flaky fish creates a flavorful and satisfying meal. This dish is perfect for a quick and easy weeknight dinner or a special occasion. It can be served with a variety of sides, such as roasted vegetables, mashed potatoes, or rice. Baked lime fish is a healthy and delicious way to enjoy the fresh flavors of the sea.
