1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1 1/2-2 cups water (may need more later)

THE BEST GREEN BEANS EVER

The Best Green Beans Ever image

Ree Drummond's Best Green Beans Ever recipe, from The Pioneer Woman on Food Network, starts with bacon grease and gains even more flavor from chicken stock.

Provided by Ree Drummond : Food Network

Categories     side-dish

Time 40m

Yield 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 pound green beans
2 tablespoons bacon grease (can substitute 2 tablespoons butter)
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 large onion, chopped
1 cup chicken broth, plus more if needed
1/2 cup chopped red bell pepper
1/2 to 1 teaspoon kosher salt (can substitute regular table salt, use 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon)
Ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Snap the stem ends of the green beans, or cut them off in a big bunch with a knife if you'd prefer.
  • Melt the bacon grease in a skillet over medium-low heat. Add the garlic and onions and cook for a minute. Then add the green beans and cook until the beans turn bright green, about a minute. Add the chicken broth, chopped red pepper, salt and pepper to taste. Turn the heat to low and cover the skillet with a lid, leaving the lid cracked to allow steam to escape. Cook until the liquid evaporates and the beans are fairly soft, yet still a bit crisp, 20 to 30 minutes. You can add more chicken broth during the cooking process, but don't be afraid to let it all cook away so the onions and peppers can start to caramelize.

PAN FRIED GREEN BEANS

Pan Fried Green Beans image

These green beans were the side dish my grandmother served most often because we all love them. They are done but not mushy like canned beans.

Provided by Shearyah Hawkins

Categories     Side Dish     Vegetables     Green Beans

Time 30m

Yield 5

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 ½ pounds fresh green beans, trimmed and snapped
garlic powder to taste
onion powder to taste
salt and pepper to taste
3 tablespoons olive oil

Steps:

  • In a stainless steel pot over medium-high heat, combine green beans, garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper. Cook, covered, until the beans begin to sweat. Remove lid and stir occasionally until beans are tender.
  • When the beans and spices have begun to 'burn' on the bottom of the pan, which will lend a grilled flavor, stir in the olive oil and turn off heat. Cover, and let stand a few minutes. Scrape the bottom of the pan to incorporate the 'burnt' spices. Beans should have a dark, caramel color, but not black.

Tips:

  • Choose fresh, tender green beans: Look for beans that are bright green and snap easily when you bend them.
  • Trim the green beans: Remove the tough ends of the beans before cooking.
  • Blanch the green beans: Blanching helps to preserve the beans' color and crispness. To blanch, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the green beans and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until they are bright green and tender. Immediately transfer the beans to a bowl of ice water to stop the cooking process.
  • Sauté the green beans: Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the blanched green beans and cook, stirring occasionally, until they are heated through and slightly browned, about 5 minutes.
  • Season the green beans: Add your desired seasonings to the green beans. Some popular options include salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika.
  • Serve the green beans: Green beans can be served as a side dish or main course. They are also a great addition to salads, soups, and stews.

Conclusion:

These lick-the-pan green beans are a delicious and easy side dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. With their crispy texture and flavorful seasoning, these beans are sure to be a hit at your next meal. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy vegetable dish, give these green beans a try. You won't be disappointed!
