KITCHEN BOUQUET WANNA-BE
In general when a recipe calls for Kitchen Bouquet I use soy sauce. However, I found a roast recipe this wouldn't be appropriate for, and therefore found this recipe on the internet (www.recipegoldmine.com). To be honest, the first time I made this I didn't even follow the instructions, I just tossed some brown sugar in a pan, melted it and added water. But it worked fine. So I hope this is useful to whoever wants it.

Steps:
- Put brown sugar in a pan on low-medium heat.
- Slowly stir until sugar has started to burn. It will smell and might melt a bit, but in this amount and at this heat it won't melt entirely. If you make a smaller amount for whatever reason it probably will melt completely but that shouldn't make a difference.
- Add water, stir well until liquid is lump-free.
- Bottle and use like Kitchen Bouquet.

- Place broth, butter, Kitchen Bouquet, onion powder and paprika into a 2 quart saucepan and bring to a boil for 2 minutes. Lower heat to a simmer. In a small bowl, stir together the water and cornstarch to form and very smooth paste, called a slurry. Dip about 2 tablespoons of the hot broth into the slurry and stir until pourable and smooth, then stir the slurry into the simmering broth. Continue to cook and stir until the mixture is of the consistency you like, about 3 more minutes. (The gravy will thicken slightly more off the heat). Taste and add salt and pepper as desired. Kitchen Bouquet or Worcestershire sauce is added for color and deeper flavor, and can be omitted if desired. This recipe is appropriate for a chicken or vegetable gravy as well; simply substitute a good quality low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth for the beef.

- arrange vegetables in a slow cooker -- top with beef chunks.set aside.
- mix flour, salt, pepper and sprinkle over meat.
- stir well -- add remaining ingredients.
- cover, heat on low setting for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-5 hours --
- remove and discard bay leaf.
- You know I find it easy to convert any favorite stre recipe from stove top to slow cooker -- if it usually simmmers 35-45 minutes.that equals 6-8 hours on low or 3-4 hours on high -- Recipes that cook 1-3 hours will be done in 8-12 hours on low or 4-6 on high.at least that is what I use as a guideline.

A sugarless version of the classing browning sauce you find in the store. if you use the regular sodium version items, decrease or omit salt in the recipe this is being added to.
