THE ORIGINAL KIELBASA AND SAUERKRAUT

The Original Kielbasa and Sauerkraut image

This is a family recipe passed down from my grandfather and my father who still make every New Year's Day. It's the best. Trust me, you'll love this recipe. It's original and kinda simple. It's 'old school.' Serve with Jewish rye bread, butter, and horseradish. A good side is mashed potatoes with cheese, milk, and butter to create a rich, creamy, tasty mashed potatoes to go with the dish.

Categories     One Dish Meal

Time 20m

Yield 2 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 lb kielbasa
1 (14 ounce) can sauerkraut, drained
1 knorr low sodium chicken broth
2 tablespoons butter

Steps:

  • Brown Kielbasa.
  • Add drained sauerkraut, chicken stock and butter.
  • Simmer for 10-15 minutes and serve.

Tips:

  • Choose the right kielbasa. Fresh kielbasa is best, but smoked or pre-cooked kielbasa can also be used. If using fresh kielbasa, prick it with a fork before cooking to prevent it from splitting.
  • Brown the kielbasa before adding the sauerkraut. This will help to develop the flavor of the kielbasa and prevent it from becoming tough.
  • Use a good quality sauerkraut. Fresh sauerkraut is best, but canned or jarred sauerkraut can also be used. If using canned or jarred sauerkraut, rinse it well before using to remove the excess salt.
  • Add some other vegetables to the dish. Onions, carrots, celery, and apples are all good additions. Apples add a sweetness that balances the tartness of the sauerkraut.
  • Season the dish to taste. Salt, pepper, and caraway seeds are all good seasonings for kielbasa and sauerkraut. You can also add a splash of vinegar or lemon juice for a bit of brightness.
  • Serve kielbasa and sauerkraut with your favorite sides. Mashed potatoes, roasted potatoes, and dumplings are all good options.

Conclusion:

Kielbasa and sauerkraut is a classic dish that is easy to make and always a crowd-pleaser. With its combination of savory kielbasa, tangy sauerkraut, and flavorful vegetables, this dish is sure to be a hit at your next gathering. So next time you're looking for a quick and easy meal, give kielbasa and sauerkraut a try. You won't be disappointed!
