Time 21m

Number Of Ingredients 12

3 Large Green Tomatoes
1 1/2 Cups All Purpose Flour
1/2 Tsp Sea Salt
1 1/2 Tsp Ground Black Pepper
1/2 Tsp Cayenne Pepper (Optional)
1 Tsp Lawry's Seasoned Salt
Vegetable Oil (For Frying)
1/2 Cup Mayonnaise
2-4 Tbsp Hot Sauce (Tabasco or Frank's work best)
1/2 Tsp Horseradish
1/2 Tsp Ground Black Pepper
1/4 Tsp Cayenne Pepper (Optional)

Steps:

  • In a large shallow bowl combine flour and spices. Whisk or stir to combine and set aside.
  • .Use a mandoline slicer or a sharp knife and cutting board to slice each tomato into 1/4 inch pieces (no larger). Lay the sliced green tomatoes out on a large cookie sheet or plate and sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  • Next dredge each slice in the flour mixture until coated shaking off the excess. Return to the cookie sheet and let sit for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes the tomatoes will begin to soak up some of the flour mixture. Once this happens dredge the tomatoes through the flour mixture a second time shaking off the excess.
  • Add vegetable oil to a large deep skillet and heat over medium heat. You want the oil about an inch deep. Once the oil is shimmering, add your green tomatoes in and fry for 3-5 minutes per side until they are brown and crispy.
  • Once golden brown remove from the oil and place on a paper towel lined plate and continue to fry in batches until all the tomatoes are fried. Serve warm with hot mayo sauce.

KAREN'S FRIED GREEN TOMATOES

Karen's Fried Green Tomatoes image

This recipe comes from my mom and they are, hands down, the best fried green tomatoes. She makes these every summer with fresh tomatoes from her garden. My sister begs her to make them for her as soon as she sees tomatoes growing big and green on the vines. While most recipes call for breadcrumbs and oil, this one calls for flour and has you fry the tomatoes in butter, which helps give these an incredible flavor.

Tips:

  • To ensure your green tomatoes are perfectly ripe, look for tomatoes that are firm and have a deep green color. Avoid tomatoes that have any blemishes or bruises.
  • Slice your tomatoes evenly so that they cook evenly. If your tomatoes are not sliced evenly, some slices may be overcooked while others are still undercooked.
  • Use a heavy-bottomed skillet for frying your green tomatoes. This will help to prevent the tomatoes from sticking to the pan and will also help to evenly distribute the heat.
  • Be sure to preheat your skillet before adding the tomatoes. This will help to prevent the tomatoes from sticking to the pan.
  • Don't overcrowd the skillet when frying the tomatoes. If you overcrowd the skillet, the tomatoes will not cook evenly and will likely become soggy.
  • Fry the tomatoes in batches if necessary. If you have a lot of tomatoes to fry, you may need to fry them in batches. This will help to ensure that all of the tomatoes are cooked evenly.
  • Serve your fried green tomatoes immediately. Fried green tomatoes are best served hot and crispy.

Conclusion:

Fried green tomatoes are a delicious and versatile dish that can be enjoyed as an appetizer, side dish, or main course. They are easy to make and can be tailored to your own personal taste. With a little bit of practice, you'll be able to make perfect fried green tomatoes every time.
