JULIE'S EXTRA SPECIAL HOLIDAY CHEX MIX

My mix is based on a recipe that my childhood best friend's mother, Mrs. Harper, had for Chex Mix. It became an annual ritual for me to call her to ask for the recipe yet again. :) This mix is so very, very yummy and decadent! Good thing I only make it once a year...

Time 1h10m

Yield 14 cups, approx

Number Of Ingredients 17

1 lb bacon, slices (approx, up to 1/2 cup drippings) or 1/3 cup bacon drippings (approx, up to 1/2 cup drippings)
1/2 cup butter
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon celery salt
1/4 teaspoon ground sage
1/2 teaspoon Lawry's Seasoned Salt, to taste
4 dashes Tabasco sauce, to taste
2 cups dry roasted peanuts
1 cup cashew pieces
2 cups pretzels (whatever shape you prefer, but small ones are easier to handle)
5 cups Corn Chex
3 cups Rice Chex
1 cup Wheat Chex
2 cups Cheerios toasted oat cereal
1 cup cheese nips or 1 cup goldfish crackers

Steps:

  • Fry up the bacon until it's nice and crisp. Note: for those who've asked, 1 pound of bacon (in my experience) will yield between 1/3 to 1/2 cup of drippings. It depends on the bacon you use.
  • Then place the cooked bacon in a container and reserve it for another use- it's the leftover drippings you're after!
  • Pre-heat the oven to 250 degrees F.
  • Melt the butter and bacon drippings together in a saucepan, then stir in the seasonings to make a nice, buttery mix.
  • In a very large bowl, combine the mix ingredients.
  • Gradually stir in the buttery seasoning mix until the dry mix is evenly coated.
  • Spread on cookie sheets and bake for 1 hour, turning every 15 minutes.
  • Spread on paper towels to cool.
  • Store in airtight container.
  • Makes about 14 cups Chex mix snack.

HOLIDAY CHEX MIX

Holiday Chex Mix image

This recipe is a keeper! It's a great way to use up cereal you may have purchased on sale, and it's such a delicious snack you'll have a hard time stopping. Use any cereal you like (chex, cinnamon toast crunch, life, or whatever you have on hand). I tried this with cheerios, captain crunch, cocoa puffs, raisin bran, and whatever else I could find. My only thought for next time is why not add some miniature marshmallows to the mix? Recipe courtesy of A Thrifty Mom. Serving size is estimated. Thank you!

Time 30m

Yield 16 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

16 cups cereal
2 cups coconut, grated
1 cup almonds, sliced (or use any nuts you prefer)
2 cups pretzels
1 cup sugar
1 cup light Karo syrup
3/4 cup butter
1 cup candy cane, dust (chopped)

Steps:

  • Mix cereal, almonds, pretzels, and coconut in a large bowl.
  • Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan combine butter, sugar, and Karo.
  • Over medium heat melt the butter and blend ingredients together.
  • Stir while heating, and once it comes to a boil, cook for 2 minutes. Set a timer because if it cooks too long it will be too hard. If it doesn't cook long enough it will be too soft.
  • Once it has cooked at a full boil for 2 minutes take the mixture off the heat.
  • Sprinkle in the topped candy canes ( make sure you add them slowly so they don't turn into a large ball).
  • As you sprinkle in the candy cane, whisk to prevent large lumps.
  • Pour over the top of the cereal mixture in bowl and stir until all cereal is well coated.
  • Then pour onto a greased cookie sheet and top with sprinkles if you want.
  • Let cool, store in a zip lock bag and enjoy!

THE BEST CHEX MIX

The Best Chex Mix image

This is essentially the recipe on a box of Chex, adjusted to my taste. I like extra seasoning, a kick from hot sauce, and a few other adjustments. I also leave out the bagel chips; they just don't seem very Chex Mix-y to me.

Tips:

  • Use a large bowl to mix the Chex cereal, pretzels, and nuts. This will help to ensure that all of the ingredients are evenly coated with the seasoning mix.
  • Be careful not to overcook the Chex mix. The cereal should be slightly toasted, but not burnt.
  • Add the melted butter to the Chex mix while it is still hot. This will help the seasoning mix to adhere to the cereal.
  • If you are using a slow cooker, cook the Chex mix on low for 2-3 hours, or until the cereal is toasted and the nuts are browned.
  • Store the Chex mix in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks.

Conclusion:

Julie's Extra Special Holiday Chex Mix is a delicious and festive snack that is perfect for parties and gatherings. With its sweet and savory flavor, this Chex mix is sure to be a hit with everyone. So next time you are looking for a quick and easy snack, give this recipe a try. You won't be disappointed!
