My mom used to come up with some interesting ways to cook hamburger....she was the Queen of Casseroles! This dish brings back wonderful memories.

  • Choose the right cut of beef: Chuck roast, brisket, and short ribs are all good options for beef casserole. These cuts are tough, but they become tender when cooked slowly in liquid.
  • Brown the beef before cooking: Browning the beef gives it a rich, caramelized flavor. Be sure to brown the beef in batches so that it doesn't steam.
  • Use a variety of vegetables: Vegetables add flavor, color, and nutrients to beef casserole. Some good options include carrots, celery, onions, potatoes, and mushrooms.
  • Use a flavorful liquid: Beef broth, red wine, or beer are all good options for the liquid in beef casserole. The liquid should be flavorful enough to stand up to the beef and vegetables.
  • Cook the casserole low and slow: Beef casserole should be cooked low and slow so that the beef has time to become tender. Cook the casserole for at least 2 hours, or until the beef is fall-apart tender.
  • Serve the casserole with mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles: Beef casserole is a hearty and filling meal that can be served with a variety of side dishes. Mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles are all good options.
