2 tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice
2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

INA GARTEN'S APPLE CHUTNEY

Categories     Apple

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 cup chopped yellow onion
2 tablespoons minced or grated fresh ginger (see note)
1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice (4 oranges)
3/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1 cup light brown sugar, lightly packed
1 teaspoon whole mustard seeds
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
11/2 teaspoons kosher salt
6 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and ½-inch-diced
3/4 cup raisins

Steps:

  • Combine the onion, ginger, orange juice, vinegar, brown sugar, mustard seeds, red pepper flakes, and salt in a medium-size saucepan. Add the apples, adding them as you chop to keep them from turning brown. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce the heat and simmer for 50 minutes to 1 hour, stirring occasionally, until most of the liquid has evaporated. Stir in the raisins and serve warm, at room temperature, or cold. Note: To mince ginger, I peel it, dice it, and process it in a mini food processor. MAKE IT AHEAD: Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Tips:

  • Use a variety of apples for a more complex flavor. Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Braeburn are all good choices.
  • Peel and core the apples before chopping them. This will help to prevent the chutney from becoming too thick.
  • Cook the chutney over low heat for a long period of time. This will help to develop the flavors and thicken the chutney.
  • Add a little bit of vinegar or lemon juice to the chutney to brighten the flavors.
  • Store the chutney in a jar in the refrigerator for up to 2 months.

Conclusion:

Ina Garten's apple chutney is a delicious and versatile condiment that can be used in a variety of ways. It is perfect for serving with roasted meats, grilled chicken, or fish. It can also be used as a spread for sandwiches or crackers. No matter how you choose to use it, Ina Garten's apple chutney is sure to be a hit.
